At an extraordinary session of the IAEA Board of Governors held in Vienna on June 23, Ambassador Vu Le Thai Hoang, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the IAEA, voiced profound concern over the increasingly complex and escalating conflict in the Middle East, especially the recent airstrikes on 21 and 22 June targeting nuclear facilities in Iran.

“These developments pose grave threats to the lives and safety of civilians as well as to peace and stability in the region and globally,” said the Ambassador. Vietnam strongly condemns all acts of violence and the use of force that violate the fundamental principles of the Charter of the United Nations and international law, particularly the respect for national independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

The Ambassador strongly condemned any attacks on nuclear facilities under the safeguards of the IAEA, warning that such actions pose significant threats to nuclear safety and security, with potentially severe implications for human lives and the environment.

Vietnam urges all concerned parties to immediately cease such acts, uphold their obligations under international treaties, and fully comply with IAEA regulations and conventions related to nuclear safety and security.

“We believe these efforts will contribute meaningfully to peace, security, and stability in the Middle East and beyond,” said Ambassador Vu Le Thai Hoang.

Vietnam reiterated its call for an immediate end to all military actions, full compliance with international law and the UN Charter and protect civilian infrastructure in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2573 (2021). Vietnam also urged parties to create of favorable conditions for dialogue and peaceful negotiations toward a comprehensive and long-term solution to the Iranian nuclear issue.

The statement reaffirmed Vietnam’s consistent position of supporting peace and security, and underscored the irreplaceable role of the IAEA in verifying nuclear programs for peaceful purposes.
