.The workshop aimed to share best practices, experiences, and lessons learned from the implementation of the UNTOC Review Mechanism in Asia-Pacific countries. It also sought to promote cooperation and strengthen national capacities in the prevention and combat of transnational organized crime. The event attracted participation from numerous countries beyond the Asia-Pacific region.
In his opening remarks, Ambassador Vu Le Thai Hoang, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations and International Organizations in Vienna, highlighted the pioneering role of the Asia-Pacific region in implementing the UNTOC Review Mechanism and reaffirmed the importance of multilateral cooperation in realizing the objectives of the Convention.
At the workshop, speakers from Japan, Vietnam, Singapore, and Pakistan shared their practical experiences and insights on how to effectively apply the Review Mechanism within their respective national contexts.
Notably, Vietnam was honoured to have an expert from the Ministry of Public Security — the designated focal agency responsible for coordinating with relevant Vietnamese bodies in implementing the UNTOC Convention — invited to present Vietnam’s practical experiences, along with the challenges and difficulties encountered during the implementation of the UNTOC Review Mechanism.
Through its participation in the Review Mechanism, Vietnam has consistently demonstrated its role as an active and responsible member of the United Nations in general, and of the UNTOC Convention in particular, by fully meeting its obligations and actively cooperating with other countries throughout the review process.
Established in 2018 and officially launched in 2020, the Review Mechanism has become an essential tool in assisting member states in strengthening their legal and institutional frameworks to more effectively prevent and combat transnational organized crime.
The Asia-Pacific region, with its rich diversity of legal systems, governance structures, and levels of development, has demonstrated a strong commitment to the UNTOC Review Mechanism—showcased by a higher proportion of countries participating in the review process compared to other regions.
The joint organization of and active participation in the workshop further reaffirms Vietnam’s strong commitment to fostering regional and global cooperation in the prevention and combat of transnational organized crime, while also contributing to the dissemination of good practices to other regions.
Additionally, speaking at the Opening Session of the 34th CCPCJ, Ambassador Vu Le Thai Hoang, in his capacity as Chair and on behalf of the Asia-Pacific countries, emphasized that the UNTOC Convention and its Protocols serve as key instruments in the fight against transnational organized crime and in enhancing international cooperation. He also reaffirmed the region’s commitment to the effective implementation of the Review Mechanism for the UNTOC Convention and its Protocols, thereby further advancing the goals of the Convention.
