Vietnam strengthens cooperation with the UN on science, technology, and AI governance: Deputy FM Dang Hoang Giang

During the meeting, Deputy Minister Giang praised the United Nations' role in promoting cooperation in science and technology, particularly its efforts in implementing the Global Digital Compact, which contributes to guiding global technology governance towards inclusivity, safety, and sustainability. The Deputy Minister emphasized that Vietnam prioritizes developing capabilities and enhancing autonomy in science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation as a strategic priority.

Welcoming the Under-Secretary-General's participation in the 6th ASEAN Digital Ministers' Meeting (ADGMIN 6) in Hanoi, the Deputy Minister highlighted the central role of the United Nations and ASEAN in promoting multilateralism and strengthening international cooperation in science and technology. He stressed the importance of ensuring that technological processes are implemented transparently, inclusively, respect international law, and bring common benefits.
Deputy Minister Giang proposed that the United Nations increase private sector participation in science and technology. He also suggested organizing technology business forums under the auspices and support of the United Nations and ASEAN.
The Deputy Minister also requested that the United Nations facilitate Vietnam's deeper involvement in UN mechanisms for research, policy consultation, and AI governance, including the Independent International Scientific Council on AI and the AI Capacity Building Network.

Under-Secretary-General Amandeep Singh Gill commended Vietnam's achievements and efforts in developing science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation. He welcomed Vietnam's participation in the AI Capacity Building Network and hosting the regional AI Center under the UN's auspices. He affirmed that the ASEAN Digital Masterplan 2030 (ADM 2030) is highly compatible with the Global Digital Compact.
Both sides agreed to enhance cooperation to promote global technology governance initiatives and to strengthen ASEAN-UN cooperation in science, technology, and artificial intelligence.
