BRIC became an official group after the meeting of the leaders of Russia, India, and China in St. Petersburg, Russia, on the sidelines of the 2006 G8 Outreach Summit. The first BRIC Summit was held in Yekaterinburg, Russia, in 2009.

In 2010, after the inclusion of South Africa, the group was officially named BRICS, representing the initial letters of its five members: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. This group represents approximately 40% of the global population and about 25% of the global economy.

Since January 1, 2024, BRICS has reached a historic milestone by welcoming five new members: Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This marks the first expansion of BRICS since 2010. With the addition of these new members, BRICS now represents approximately 37% of the global GDP in terms of purchasing power parity and 46% of the world's population.

Chinese President Xi Jinping referred to the expansion of BRICS as a historic milestone and a new starting point for BRICS cooperation.
