At the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son expressed his gratitude to Minister Margus Tsahkna and the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their active coordination and thorough preparations for the first official visit of the Vietnamese Prime Minister to Estonia.
Both sides expressed their satisfaction with the positive developments in bilateral relations, especially since the meeting between the two ministers on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session in September 2023. Deputy Prime Bui Thanh Son affirmed Vietnam’s desire to strengthen cooperation with Estonia across all fields, particularly in e-government, digital transformation, data center development, and the application of information technology in state management and socio-economic development.
Minister Margus Tsahkna appreciated the significance of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s official visit to Estonia, emphasizing it as a milestone that deepens bilateral relations. He underlined Estonia’s focus on strengthening ties with the Asia-Pacific region, including Vietnam; affirmed Estonia’s commitment to promoting the prompt ratification of the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) by remaining EU member states; and shared Estonia’s aspiration to further enhance cooperation with Vietnam in trade, investment, and digital transformation.
The two ministers affirmed their commitment to promote exchanges of delegations at various levels; praised the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs during this visit; and emphasized the need to soon implement mechanisms for political consultations, policy dialogues, and cooperation in information technology, aiming to build a modern digital diplomacy. They also also committed to leveraging the leadership role of their Foreign Ministries to effectively implement the outcomes of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s visit to Estonia.
On this occasion, the two sides exchanged views on international and regional issues of mutual concern. Regarding maritime and ocean affairs, they agreed to maintain consultations in multilateral forums, especially the United Nations, to contribute to peace, stability, and sustainable development in the region and worldwide. They reaffirmed support for peaceful dispute resolution through dialogue based on international law and the UN Charter, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982).
Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son took the opportunity to invite Minister Margus Tsahkna to visit Vietnam soon, and the Estonian Minister warmly accepted the invitation.
