Vietnam intensifies law on child protections

Vietnam has made great effort in poverty and hunger reduction. Its social security and educational programmes have initially met the demand of children, especially impoverished ones.

The freshly released Law on Children and the National programme on child protection during 2016-2020 are seen as significant progresses in realizing commitments of the Government on child caring and protection.

Vietnam was the first in Asia and second in the world to adopt the Convention on the Rights of the Child of the United Nations.

The Ministry of Labour, Invalids, and Social Affairs has deployed the Action month for children in June attempting to increase public’s awareness on child sexual abuse and violence.

However, child abuse and violence figures still remain high. According to the non-governmental organization Save the Children, 700 million children aged from 2 to 17 are victims of serious abuse and 64 percent of them come from Asian countries. The Ministry of Public Security said there are more than 1,000 child abuse cases in Vietnam every year.

Key factors such as community, family, school, teachers should have adequate information and knowledge about the issue. Schools should also have mechanism to allow pupils to raise their voice about violence and measures to cope with child abuse.
