She called for restraint from both sides to de-escalate tensions in the interests of the two countries’ peoples and to resolve any disputes by peaceful means on the basis of international law, to contribute to peace and stability in the region and the world.
The Nagorno-Karabakh region is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan but is controlled by ethnic Armenians. This has resulted in a territorial war between the two countries, which peaked between February 1988 and May 1994.
Fierce fighting broke out again in the region on September 27.
