Minh briefed about recent efforts made by Vietnam and ASEAN in dealing with the pandemic, underlining the significance of regional and international cooperation, including ASEAN-Australia cooperation, in this issue.

He spoke highly of the two countries’ efforts in regularly and effectively maintaining contact channels at all levels despite this difficult time and suggested both sides continue fostering cooperation through the existing mechanisms in order to sustain the positive development pace of the Vietnam-Australia strategic partnership.

Meanwhile, Ms. Payne appreciated the initiatives and role of Vietnam as the current ASEAN Chair, affirming her country wishes to further tighten ties with Vietnam in the fight against the pandemic both at bilateral and multilateral aspects.

She extended thanks to the Government of Vietnam for having offered medical consular support for Australian citizens affected by the virus over the past time.

The pair agreed to continue exchanges, information and experience sharing in COVID-19 prevention and control work, including possible joint research and development of vaccines and production of medical supplies and equipment.

The sides agreed to convene an annual meeting between the two foreign ministries in the 3rd quarter this year in Australia or in form of video conference to discuss measures to beef up the strategic partnership, with a focus on cooperation in healthcare, food security, and mitigation of socio-economic impacts caused by the pandemic.

Both sides also agreed to continue strengthening coordination and mutual support at multilateral forums, especially the United Nations and ASEAN-led mechanisms and over regional and international issues of common concerns, including maintenance of peace, stability and security in the East Sea on the basis of respect for international law, especially the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
