Vietnamese Ambassador to Japan Vu Hong Nam reviewed the country’s history, underlining that from a country severely damaged by wars, it has been turned into one of the most dynamic and attractive economies in Asia.

Regarding the relationship between Viet Nam and Japan, the diplomat said that after 48 years of diplomatic relations, the two countries have become the most reliable partners based on mutual understanding, equal cooperation and common interest. Under the leadership of Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide, Japan-Viet Nam relations are developing, he said.

Among the 136 countries and territories investing in Viet Nam, Japan is the largest official development aid (ODA) provider, with 28 billion USD in non-refundable aid and loans. In the first six months of this year, Japanese investment in Viet Nam reached 2.44 billion USD. With 4,900 projects totaling 63.1 billion USD in capital being implemented in Viet Nam, Japan has become the second-largest investor in the Southeast Asian country.

In the fight against the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic, Nam said the Governments and peoples of the two countries have been giving each other sympathy and material support. In particular, Japan has provided Viet Nam with 3 million vaccine doses and other medical supplies and equipment.

In his opening speech, Ambassador Pham Sanh Chau spoke highly of efforts and preventive measures by the Government of India in the COVID-19 fight which have helped stabilise the situation in the country.

He expressed his gratitude to the Indian Government for sending 300 oxygen generators and 100 tonnes of liquid oxygen to support the treatment of COVID-19 patients in Viet Nam.

2021 marks the fifth year of the Viet Nam-India comprehensive strategic partnership, the ambassador said, adding that the countries will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the bilateral diplomatic ties next year.

The trade relations between the two countries have flourished, with trade turnover in the first half of 2021 returning to the level before the pandemic and holding ample room for growth, Chau affirmed.

The diplomat voiced his hope that the upward trend will be maintained to soon reach the target of 15 billion USD set by the two countries’ leaders.
