Son Doong Cave named in top 7 underground attractions

In addition to the underground river and lake system, developed jungle ecosystem and spectacular geological layers, Son Doong Cave is also home to a number of plant and animal species that do not exist anywhere else.

Recently, the South China Morning Post (SCMP - China) honoured Vietnam's Son Doong Cave as one of the 7 most beautiful underground attractions in the world.

Son Doong cave is nestled in Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, Quang Binh Province - the largest national park in Vietnam covering an area of around 1,233km2. This marvellous natural wonder hides a whole world inside it: river, jungle and climate. Its name means “River Mountain Cave”, with 150 metres by width, 200 metres by height, and up to over 9 kilometres by length, this cave is literally a giant skyscraper. Here, visitors can easily find unique cave’s pearls and small creatures, insects and also the wildlife animals, such as monkeys, birds, bats, and blind fish.

The article in SCMP reviews the journey to find the world's largest cave.

Thereby, during a forest trip in 1991, a local named Ho Khanh discovered the entrance of the cave. However, the sound of rushing water and strong wind made him not dare to continue entering the cave. Subsequent times, he could not remember the location of the "mysterious cave".

Not until 2008, Mr. Khanh found the location of the cave entrance and contacted the British expedition team. Through measurements, explorers confirmed that the cave is 5 km long.

In addition to the underground river and lake system, developed jungle ecosystem, 400 million year old fossils and spectacular geological layers, Son Doong Cave is also home to a number of species of plants and animals that do not exist anywhere else on Earth.

In 2018, a group of British experts researching caves discovered that Son Doong cave is at least 30% larger and much deeper than previous information.

Besides the world’s largest cave in Vietnam, other 6 most beautiful underground attractions in the world include: Tham Luang Nang Non, Thailand; Paris Catacombs, France; Cold War bunkers, Albania; Reed Flute Cave, China; Malinta Tunnel, the Philippines; National Coal Mining Museum for England, UK.
