Vietnam are now just one win away from their fourth consecutive SEA Games women’s football title after coach Mai Duc Chung’s side trounced hosts Cambodia 4-0 in the semi-final clash on Friday evening to march into the gold-medal decider.

With Cambodia considered the underdogs, coach Mai Duc Chung decided to bench several key players, including forward Huynh Nhu and midfielder Nguyen Bich Thuy.

However, the defending champions still proved too strong for the hosts to create any surprise.

Vietnamese forward Pham Hai Yen was denied an opener by the post in the fourth minute before Ngan Thi Van Su headed home from close range 16 minutes later to open the scoring for the Vietnamese side.

Inspired by the goal, Vietnam continued to pressure and find their second goal at the half hour mark thanks to Pham Hai Yen’s comfortable strike.

Tran Thi Thuy Trang completed a fabulous first half for Mai Duc Chung’s side by beating the Cambodian goalkeeper from the spot to make it 3-0.

Cambodia mainly played on the defence throughout the second half as the Vietnamese team maintained their attacking rhythm.

Shortly before the final whistle, Vietnam were awarded a penalty following a Cambodian defender’s handball in the box. Substitute Huynh Nhu did not miss the chance to seal a commanding 4-0 victory for the reigning title holders.

With the triumph, Vietnam have set up a final match against Myanmar who came from behind to defeat powerhouses Thailand 4-2 in another semi-final clash on the same evening.
