The investment project for the Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang expressway, phase 1, was approved by the National Assembly under Resolution No. 60/2022/QH15.
The project spans 188.2 km, with a scale of 4 lanes and a total investment of 44,691 billion VND. It is expected to be substantially completed by 2026 and fully operational by 2027.
This is a crucial horizontal expressway, passing through An Giang province and Can Tho city (formerly including An Giang province, Can Tho city, Hau Giang province, and Soc Trang province). The project is divided into four component projects, managed by the local People's Committees. The section through An Giang province was technically opened on December 19.
According to the Can Tho City Traffic and Agricultural Construction Investment Project Management Board, the expressway section through the city includes three component projects 2, 3, and 4, with a total length of 132.47 km and a total investment of 31,288 billion VND.

According to reports, the project has currently achieved about 49% of the construction volume, with the bridge section exceeding 80%, as 100 bridges are being constructed simultaneously.
Previously, the project faced difficulties with sand filling materials, but after decisive directives from the Prime Minister, the supply has now been largely met. Contractors are working in three shifts to meet the progress requirements.
Inspecting the project site in Long Hung commune, Can Tho city, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized that the sooner the project is completed, the more savings are achieved, benefiting the people and localities by opening up new development spaces. He demanded that the project be technically opened by June 30, 2026.
Accordingly, a new gantt chart for progress must be constructed, with detailed monthly plans; materials such as sand, stone, gravel, and asphalt must be proactively secured to ensure sufficiency; favorable weather conditions should be utilized, and additional forces and equipment should be mobilized for construction.
The Prime Minister stressed that the project must ensure progress, quality, labor safety, and environmental sanitation. Particularly, contractors must be tightly managed to prevent too many contractors on a short stretch. The Secretary and Chairman of Can Tho City must direct inspections and have solutions to address this, preventing the division of packages and avoiding negativity and waste. Additionally, attention must continue to be given to resettlement, ensuring new living conditions are better or equivalent to the old ones.
The Prime Minister also reiterated the requirement that the Can Tho - Ca Mau expressway project be completed by January 31, 2026, to ensure the entire North-South expressway from Cao Bang to Ca Mau is operational.
