The Vietnamese Delegation in Geneva recently hosted a New Year's gathering, drawing a large crowd of expatriates, officials and staff from Vietnamese representative agencies based in French-speaking regions of Switzerland.

In his opening speech, Vietnamese Ambassador Mai Phan Dung highlighted the invaluable contributions made by overseas Vietnamese, including those in Geneva and other Swiss states, to the homeland’s achievements over the past year.

The Vietnamese people living and working in Switzerland, as well as in other countries and territories worldwide, are an inseparable part of the Vietnamese nation, playing a crucial role in preserving, promoting, and showcasing Vietnamese culture to the world, he emphasised.

Ambassador Dung shared an update on Vietnam’s recent milestones, highlighting diplomacy as one of the standout successes of the past year. Among these achievements, one stood out as particularly historic: the adoption of the Convention against Cybercrime, known as the Hanoi Convention, by the United Nations General Assembly in late 2024. This marked the first time a Vietnamese city lent its name to a global multilateral treaty, a testament to Vietnam’s growing stature and reputation on the world stage.

The Vietnamese Delegation in Geneva is proud of contributing to Vietnam’s diplomatic success, particularly as the country continues its proactive and active role in various international organisations, including the UN Human Rights Council for the 2023-2025 tenure, he added.

The gathering was further enriched by a captivating documentary that showcased Vietnam’s remarkable achievements throughout 2024.

As the event drew to a close, heartfelt wishes for a prosperous and peaceful New Year resonated among attendees.
