Vietnam and Mongolia have maintained traditional friendly and cooperative relations since their establishment of diplomatic ties on November 17, 1954. According to Vietnamese Ambassador to Mongolia Doan Khanh Tam, the first visit to Mongolia by late President Ho Chi Minh in July 1955 and the visit to Vietnam by First Secretary of the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (MPRP) Central Committee and Chairman of the Council of Ministers Yumjaagiin Tsedenbal in September 1959 set a foundation for the friendship between the two peoples.

The two countries have maintained the exchange of visits and contacts between their high-ranking leaders, significantly contributing to consolidating and enhancing their mutual political trust and understanding, he said.

In meetings with Vietnamese leaders, Mongolian leaders always affirm that Vietnam is the main and most important partner in Mongolia's foreign policy in the Southeast Asia region, considering Vietnam as an important gateway for Mongolia to penetrate the ASEAN market of 700 million people.

Economic and trade cooperation between Vietnam and Mongolia has been promoted over the years, with two-way trade increasing from just US$5-6 million in 1994-1995 to about US$50 million in 2020.

Over the past 69 years, the traditional friendship and cooperative relations between Vietnam and Mongolia have developed positively through the exchange of visits and bilateral cooperation mechanisms.

According to the latest statistics, trade exchanges between the two countries reached US$85 million in 2022, and the figure is expected to keep rising in coming years as there is still much room for both sides to enhance bilateral cooperation.

Senior leaders of the two countries have signed many cooperation documents, such as a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on economic and trade cooperation in 2021, an MoU on cultural cooperation in 2022, an MoU on cooperation in the field of immigration management, and an MoU on agriculture cooperation in 2022.

Vietnam and Mongolia are also working on new agreements, including an agreement on investment promotion and protection, and an agreement on visa exemption for ordinary passport holders.

Besides, localities of the two countries have also set up ties like Hanoi - Ulaanbaatar, Ho Chi Minh City – Ulaanbaatar, Hoa Binh – Tuv, and Dak Lak – Orkhon.

High-level cooperation agreements to be signed during the trip are expected to create an important legal basis for the two countries to remove obstacles, and promote collaboration in the fields where both have strengths such as agriculture, mining and tourism, and contribute to balancing the two-way trade.
