Khan Academy Ambassador on his journey to spread the passion for programming to Vietnamese students

Nearly 10,000 kilometres and a five-hour time difference separate Vietnam from Eswatini, a small country in Southern Africa. However, that distance does not prevent Hoang Nguyen Phuc Anh from sharing his passion with other students in the Open Class about programming on the Khan Academy platform.

From a passion for programming…

In 2023, Hoang Nguyen Phuc Anh was among the few high school students in Vietnam to receive a scholarship to study at UWC South Africa, part of the United World Colleges network. Living and studying in Eswatini is a groundbreaking yet challenging opportunity for Phuc Anh to get closer to his long-term goal of becoming a global citizen and a cultural and intellectual ambassador who helps connect cultures and nations worldwide.

On the journey to realising his dream, Phuc Anh always focuses on improving his knowledge and skills. In particular, his passion for programming has given him a lot of memorable experiences.

Phuc Anh’s passion for coding was sparked as an elementary student. It was when he first encountered the Khan Academy platform. Programming courses at Khan Academy allowed him to practice basic techniques like editing text and adding images on a webpage.

Impressed by the miracle of programming, Phuc Anh continuously explored more from variable online resources. Since grade 10, Phuc Anh has been delved into the VEX VR robot. After grasping the basics, he and his friends created tutorial videos on programming VEX VR robots. He also taught VEX VR robot programming to students in Bao Thang District (Lao Cai Province) and Binh Gia District (Lang Son Province). This year, he took a new step and became a "Khan Academy Ambassador" to teach programming to over 300 students.

For Phuc Anh, programming is not just a career with a lucrative salary. It also helps him develop essential skills like analytical thinking and problem-solving. With those skills, Phuc Anh has a solid foundation to succeed in extracurricular activities like Model United Nations (MUN) or becoming a "teacher" to students nationwide.

…to becoming a "teacher" of Khan Academy Open Classes

By a stroke of fate, Phuc Anh started as a learner and became a "teacher" in the same programming course he had once studied at Khan Academy. In his new role, he inspires other Vietnamese students to explore the beauty of code.

The free online Open Class about programming is where educational opportunities are limitless. Everyone can attend, regardless of geography, time, or finances. Despite the distance or time difference between Vietnam and Eswatini, Phuc Anh gives lectures weekly, strengthening the programming skills and technology knowledge of 300 students.

Phuc Anh shared that he feels interested and meaningful in witnessing students' eagerness and joy when learning about programming. The class includes students from second to tenth grade and even university students. With more and more lessons to learn, students became more and more enthusiastic, eagerly presenting their successfully programmed projects. They could be a painting, a poem, or a webpage. That is the beautiful journey of learning and finding passions, breaking their limits, and becoming better versions of themselves.

Looking ahead, Phuc Anh wants to continue contributing to Vietnamese education by organising free "Digital Skills Enhancement" classes this summer. He aims to equip students with programming knowledge and how to use the Internet safely. Phuc Anh hopes to organise more courses at Khan Academy, not just for Vietnamese students but also for students in Eswatini, as he believes in "the power of spreading educational opportunities from Khan Academy to every student."
