General Secretary, President To Lam welcomes Thai National Assembly President and House Speaker Sophon Zaram
WVR - On August 7, in Hanoi, General Secretary and President To Lam met with President of the National Assembly, Speaker of the House of Representative of Thailand Sophon Zaram on the occasion of his official visit to Vietnam and participation in activities commemorating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Thailand (August 6, 1976 – August 6, 2026).

Warmly welcoming President of the National Assembly Sophon Zaram and the high-level delegation of the Thai National Assembly, General Secretary and President To Lam emphasised that the visit holds special significance, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. It marks a milestone demonstrating the robust development of Vietnam-Thailand relations and provides new momentum for bilateral cooperation in the future.
The General Secretary and President expressed delight at the positive developments in the relationship between the two countries across all fields. He highly appreciated the outcomes of the talks between President of the National Assembly Sophon Zaram and Chairman of the National Assembly Tran Thanh Man, as well as the meeting with Prime Minister Le Minh Hung. The General Secretary and President emphasised the importance of the Thai National Assembly's role in promoting bilateral cooperation Vietnam-Thailand; affirmed that parliamentary cooperation is a crucial pillar, contributing to strengthening political trust and effectively implementing agreements between the high-level leaders of the two countries.
The General Secretary and President suggested that both sides continue to consolidate political trust through regular exchanges of delegations, high-level and various-level contacts. He urged the effective implementation of the Action Program for the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and Thailand for the 2026-2031 period. He also expressed the hope to soon welcome the King and Queen of Thailand to visit Vietnam in the near future.

President of the National Assembly of Thailand Sophon Zaram expressed his pleasure at his first official visit to Vietnam. He sincerely thanked General Secretary and President To Lam for the warm and respectful reception given to the delegation. He conveyed the greetings and best wishes of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, and other Thai leaders to General Secretary and President To Lam and other high-ranking Vietnamese leaders.
He expressed his admiration and congratulated Vietnam on its significant development achievements in recent times. He highly appreciated Vietnam's increasingly important role and position in the region and the world, emphasizing the desire to learn from Vietnam's experience in streamlining organizational structures.
President of the National Assembly Sophon Zaram affirmed that Thailand always values the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Vietnam. He noted that the two countries have a strong foundation of enduring friendship, many similar strategic interests, and vast cooperation potential. He stated that the elevation of bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership has opened a new phase of development in bilateral relations, emphasizing the desire to promote comprehensive cooperation with Vietnam, especially in the fields of economy, trade, education, and tourism.
Highly appreciating the cooperation between the two National Assemblies in recent times, the President of the National Assembly of Thailand affirmed that the Thai National Assembly will continue to closely coordinate with the Vietnamese National Assembly to enhance cooperation both bilaterally and multilaterally. He emphasized the importance of exchanging experiences in legislative work, supervision, and decision-making on important national issues.
The two leaders agreed to continue strengthening cooperation in defense and security, closely coordinating in combating transnational crime, and soon concretizing the "Three Connections" Strategy. They aim to effectively implement specific cooperation programs and projects to enhance the connectivity of the two economies and promote balanced and sustainable bilateral trade, with the goal of reaching a trade turnover of 25 billion USD and further to 50 billion USD, as per the common understanding of the leaders of the two countries.
The President of the National Assembly of Thailand thanked Vietnam for its attention and support to Thai businesses investing and doing business in Vietnam. The two leaders agreed to continue creating favorable conditions and encouraging businesses from one country to expand investment in the other.
Sharing the opinions of the President of the National Assembly of Thailand, who highly appreciated the bridging role of the Vietnamese community in Thailand, the General Secretary and President hoped that the Thai National Assembly and relevant agencies would continue to pay attention and create favourable conditions for the Vietnamese community to stabilize their lives and contribute positively to strengthening the friendship between the peoples of the two countries.
The General Secretary and President also suggested that both sides continue to promote relations between the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Bhumjaithai Party, thereby expanding the stable cooperation foundation between the two countries.
The two leaders agreed to continue closely coordinating in regional and international cooperation mechanisms, especially ASEAN, Mekong Sub-region cooperation mechanisms, and the United Nations, for the benefit of the peoples of the two countries, contributing positively to maintaining peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the region.
