Deputy PM, FM Bui Thanh Son welcomed Portuguese Government's decision to open an Embassy in Vietnam

WVR - On the afternoon of March 18, at the Headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son received Mr. Luiz de Albuquerque Veloso, Ambassador of Portugal to Thailand, concurrently to Vietnam, on the occasion of his new term of office.

At the reception, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Son congratulated Ambassador Luiz de Albuquerque Veloso on presenting his credentials to President Luong Cuong; affirmed that Vietnam attaches importance to and wishes to further deepen the friendship and multifaceted cooperation with Portugal; emphasized the hope that the Ambassador will have a successful term with many contributions to promoting the increasingly deep and effective development of Vietnam-Portugal relations.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Son welcomed the Portuguese Government's decision to open an Embassy in Vietnam by the end of 2025; suggested that the two countries' Ministries of Foreign Affairs promote their focal roles, closely coordinate to promote visits, contacts, and delegation exchanges between the two sides, especially in the context of Vietnam and Portugal celebrating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations (1975-2025); effectively implement existing cooperation mechanisms and agreements such as the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs and the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between the two Diplomatic Academies, as well as complete negotiations towards signing an agreement on labor cooperation.

Expressing satisfaction with the positive growth of bilateral trade turnover in recent years, in order to continue strengthening bilateral cooperation in all fields, the two sides agreed to effectively implement and make good use of the great opportunities from the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA), aiming to bring trade turnover to 1 billion USD in the coming time.

The two sides agreed to continue promoting cooperation in the fields of infrastructure, renewable energy, marine economy, tourism, information technology, training of high-quality human resources, especially in the field of semiconductors.

For his part, Ambassador Luiz de Albuquerque Veloso thanked Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Son for taking the time to meet him; expressed his honour to assume the position of concurrent Ambassador of Vietnam; agreed with the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister's assessment that the two countries still have much potential and room to move towards upgrading bilateral relations in the coming time.

In response to the proposal of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Son, Ambassador Luiz de Albuquerque Veloso affirmed that he will continue to strengthen cooperation with Vietnam in multilateral forums and international organizations, especially at the United Nations; emphasizing that he will closely coordinate with relevant Vietnamese agencies to promote cooperation in line with the strengths and needs of the two countries, as well as organize activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations, contributing to promoting the Vietnam-Portugal friendship.
