Viet Nam recorded 28 further community infections in six northern localities.

Of the fresh cases, 13 are in Bac Ninh province, seven in Vinh Phuc province, five in Bac Giang, and one each in Lang Son, Hai Duong and Ha Noi's National Hospital for Tropical Diseases.

The majority of the latest cases came into close contact with confirmed coronavirus patients or were detected to be positive via mass testing. Viet Nam counted 2,056 domestic infections and 1,433 imported cases so far, while 2,618 patients have fully recovered from the disease.

In his remarks during a recent of the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control, Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long stated that Viet Nam is on high alert as the pandemic is spreading swiftly as new coronavirus variants have made the fourth wave of the outbreak more complex than the previous ones.

He also underlined the need to strictly following the Health Ministry’s 5K message, including khau trang (face masks), khu khuan (disinfection), khoang cach (distancing), khong tu tap (no gatherings), and khai bao y te (health declarations).

Also at the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam, head of the committee, ordered a closer watch on border areas and people under quarantine and to rapidly detect cases through contact tracing as well as regular screen testing.

Localities that are yet to record any COVID-19 cases should stay vigilant and maintain close supervision, he added.

Earlier May 10 Viet Nam registered the biggest-ever daily number of domestic locations at 125 since the pandemic hit the country more than a year ago.

A total of 25,057 people were vaccinated against COVID-19 in 41 provinces and cities alongside the Ministry of Defence’s health facilities on May 11, raising the total number to 892,454 nationwide. The vaccinated people are mostly frontline medical workers, members of local steering committees for COVID-19 prevention and control, and members of police and military forces.
