Binh Duong: Teachers’ proactive use of technology brings positive changes to students

Binh Duong, one of Vietnam’s pioneering smart cities, is steadily advancing digital transformation in education, backed by a dedicated community of teachers.

Embracing technological trends, educators here continuously explore and apply cutting-edge online platforms like Khan Academy to enhance teaching and support students. From innovative teaching methods to closely monitoring learning outcomes, Binh Duong teachers are unlocking students’ full potential while contributing to a modern education system aligned with the city’s smart development goals.

Teachers Embrace Technology for Teaching and Learning

The 2024-2025 school year marked a significant milestone for Binh Duong’s Department of Education and Training as it introduced the Khan Academy Vietnam (KAV) Open School Model to schools nationwide. Educators quickly integrated the platform into their teaching strategies. Many schools have emerged as "shining examples" of innovation, offering students and teachers opportunities to explore fresh, engaging learning methods. The proactive and passionate involvement of teachers is the key to the initial success of this model.

At Hung Vuong High School for the Gifted in Thu Dau Mot City, math teacher Phương Trang shared how KAV tools enhanced her teaching and assessment methods. When exercising at Khan Academy, she can use the platform's mastery point system to encourage students to complete their assignments with high scores. “The lessons at Khan Academy are interactive and aligned with our classroom curriculum, making it easier for students to grasp concepts. The mastery scoring system motivates them by reflecting on their progress after each lesson,” she said.

Similarly, Tran Quoc Tuan Primary School in Ben Cat City has been a trailblazer in incorporating technology into teaching. Principals and teachers actively promote the use of Khan Academy, ensuring effective and meaningful implementation. In particular, teachers at the school also proactively seek out initiatives to optimize students’ learning effectiveness. Ms. Tran Thi Kim Them, an IT teacher, emphasized that helping students achieve the master level of the platform yields the best results. Teachers encourage students to revisit and practice exercises until they achieve mastery, eliminating knowledge gaps. Echoing this, Ms. Tran Thi Hang, a homeroom teacher, highlighted how integrating Khan Academy into lessons familiarized students with the platform’s interface, enabling seamless learning at home. She rewards top-performing students with stationery gifts to boost motivation and make learning an exciting journey. This approach fosters self-discipline and a love for learning among students.

At the Luong The Vinh Primary School, also in Ben Cat City, teacher Ngo Huu Nghiep noted that the school administration oversees KAV’s implementation. Teachers create individual KAV accounts for students to practice weekly, with the school’s leadership monitoring progress. “The administration closely monitors each class’s progress to ensure effective use of Khan Academy. We also introduce the platform to parents, helping them feel assured and encouraging their children’s participation,” Mr. Nghiep explained.

The First "Fruits of Success": Inspiring Self-Directed Learning in Students

Integrating online learning and mastery-based assessments through Khan Academy has brought about transformative changes for teachers and students in Binh Duong. Teachers noted that the platform allows students to review materials anytime, anywhere, free from space constraints. This accessibility is invaluable for students needing extra help with challenging topics or wanting to dive deeper into lessons.

Teachers appreciate Khan Academy’s visual and interactive tools, which help students better understand lessons. The platform’s diverse exercises accommodate learners at all levels - struggling students start with simpler tasks, while advanced learners can explore more complex content. According to Ms. Hang, weekly progress tracking reveals students’ enthusiasm for learning. She added, “Initially, some parents worried about online learning due to time management concerns. However, they now actively encourage participation after witnessing their children’s progress and growing independence.”

Binh Duong: Teachers’ proactive use of technology brings positive changes to students
The dedication of the teaching staff has borne the "fruits of success" through the achievements of their students.

Support from school leaders, dedication from teachers, and encouragement from parents have created a powerful motivator for students. For many, learning at Khan Academy is a novel experience and an opportunity to cultivate perseverance and initiative. Students have shown remarkable improvement, with growing confidence to tackle exercises and actively contribute during class discussions. For teachers, the greatest reward is witnessing students’ daily progress and enthusiasm - a testament to their efforts in nurturing lifelong learners.

The KAV Open School Model has brought fresh air to Binh Duong’s education landscape, empowering teachers to innovate and harness technology for teaching. With robust school support and collaboration with parents, this model promises continued success in helping students take charge of their learning journeys. The future looks bright as Binh Duong’s education system embraces comprehensive and proactive approaches to knowledge acquisition, paving the way for the next generation in this smart city.
