The ASEAN Future Forum (AFF) is Vietnam’s premier Track 1.5 multilateral initiative, announced by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh at the 43rd ASEAN Summit in Jakarta, Indonesia, on September 2023. As Vietnam's first large-scale Track 1.5 multilateral initiative, the AFF brings together leaders, experts, researchers, businesses, and young scholars to exchange ideas, propose new initiatives to shape ASEAN's development trajectory while strengthening cooperation between ASEAN and its partners.
The AFF’s inaugural edition in April 2024 was highly successful, attracting widespread interest, response, and support from ASEAN countries and the international community.
Sharing at the press conference, the Acting Director of the Institute for Strategic Studies, Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, Mr Trinh Minh Manh said that after nearly six decades of existence and development, ASEAN is preparing to enter a new stage of growth after completing the implementation of the ASEAN Community Vision 2025. The new situation raises many questions for ASEAN, both now and in the future: How can it maintain its identity and central role while adapting to changes in the region and the world? How can it balance and harmonize the concerns and interests of its members? How can it strike a balance between innovation and preserving ASEAN's core values?
In this context, the idea of organizing the ASEAN Future Forum is part of the efforts of Vietnam and other ASEAN countries to create a platform for exchanging ideas and seeking solutions to these questions. This is also Vietnam's initiative with the desire to contribute, along with member countries, ASEAN's friends and partners, and the people of ASEAN, to promote the shaping of the future development path for ASEAN.
