Vietnamese Grandmaster Hoang Thi Bao Tram is competing at the second SJC Cup International Chess Championship that kicked off on April 11 in Hong Kong (China) on the occasion of St. Joseph’s College’s 150th anniversary.

Running from April 11-13, eight world-class chess grandmasters, including Tram, are battling it out in thrilling rapid and blitz matches. The winner earns a historic showdown against AI powerhouse DeepSeek on April 13.

After seven rounds on April 12, Tram held second place. The unique eight-player round-robin format and elite competition make this event special. Aiming for a top-three finish, she’s also excited about the chance to face DeepSeek, a dream for any player.

The AI clash echoes iconic human-vs-machine battles like IBM Deep Blue vs. Kasparov and AlphaGo vs. Lee Sedol. Beyond competition, the SJC Cup promotes chess, youth development, cultural exchange, and Hong Kong (China)’s global image in tech and sports.

On April 13, the eight grandmasters will face off against 64 young players, symbolising a chessboard’s squares to inspire the next generation.
