The Russian Student Olympiad is one of the largest academic and professional competitions in the country, designed to assess students' knowledge and skills while identifying outstanding talent across various fields.

First held in 2017, the competition is organized annually with the support of Russia’s Ministry of Science and Higher Education, and in partnership with major corporations such as Sberbank, Gazprom, Yandex, top universities, and industry experts.

This year, the competition attracted over 185,000 students from across Russia, competing in 71 categories spanning fields such as science and technology, agriculture, education, medicine, and more.

Contestants are required to solve real-world problems developed by representatives from leading Russian universities and over 700 companies and enterprises, ensuring practical relevance.

With the simple desire to test his skills and without focusing too much on the results, Huynh Tan Cuong decided to register after learning about the competition through his department’s information channels.

“During the competition, I had to find solutions to highly realistic and challenging problems within a limited timeframe, which required prior preparation in technical knowledge and the ability to quickly implement algorithms,” Cuong shared.

“Fortunately, thanks to my quick self-learning ability and the valuable guidance and support from professors in my department’s lab, I was able to equip myself with essential skills,” he added.

This year marked the first time in the competition's history that the final round of the Robotics category was held at Sberbank’s technology centre.

Finalists had to present their solutions to a judging panel that included experts from Sber, ITMO, Navio, Robowizard, and StarLine, especially Albert Efimov – Vice President and Head of Research and Innovation at Sberbank’s Technology Division.

As the only international student to surpass both the Preliminary and Semifinal rounds with exceptional results, Huynh Tan Cuong advanced to the Final Round and earned 175 points, securing the Bronze Medal, just 184 points short of Silver and 185 points of Gold.

At the end of the competition, Cuong expressed his emotions: “I feel very happy and proud to have proven my capabilities and the potential of Vietnamese students in Russia. I hope this achievement will help inspire the learning and competitive spirit among Vietnamese students here, affirming Vietnam’s intellectual strength on the international stage.”

Mr. Antipov Vladislav Alekseevich, a member of the organizing committee and Cuong’s mentor during the competition, remarked: “I first met Cuong in the Laboratory of Geometric Control Methods and Applications at ITMO University. At that time, he had little experience with computer vision and SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping). But after just one year, Cuong became a Bronze Medal winner thanks to his persistence, resilience, and intelligence.”

Huynh Tan Cuong stands as an exemplary role model of the young Vietnamese generation in Russia, demonstrating a tireless spirit of learning and research that helps affirm the position of Vietnamese students on the global academic map.

Speaking about his future plans, Cuong shared: “I plan to pursue a master’s degree in Robotics. After that, I hope to return to Vietnam to contribute my part to the development of my home country”.
