What is your opinion on the project “Day for Honouring Vietnamese Language in Vietnamese Communities Abroad in the period 2023-2030” approved by the Prime Minister on August 3?

The language of a nation contains traditions, identity, and internal strength of that nation. Preserving and honoring the Vietnamese language help promote and affirm not only the status of Vietnamese culture but also position of the country.

It also contributes to preserving national history and culture of the nation as well as to protecting a valuable asset of the unified and prosperous Vietnam.

The Prime Minister’s decision to choose September 8 as the Day for Honouring Vietnamese Language in Vietnamese Communities Abroad is an important milestone in politics, in people-to-people diplomacy, and in the mission of spreading Vietnamese language and Vietnamese culture to the world.

As a Vietnamese studies scholar, how do you assess the current stature of Vietnamese language in the world?

The activities related to Vietnamese language and events related to Vietnamese studies in Vietnam and around the world have shown encouraging signs.

Vietnamese language has received a lot of attention in Asia. Vietnamese language in Vietnamese studies curricula in a couple of countries around the world such as the US and France is increasingly popular. Specifically, the demand for learning Vietnamese in Japan and Korea is quite high; in Taiwan (China), Vietnamese is accepted as the language taught in schools.

Recently, a workshop with the participation of experts from Colombia University, USA was held in Hanoi. During the event, the experts certified the possibility of cooperation between Colombia University and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University-Hanoi in the fields of Vietnamese language and culture, and Vietnamese studies.

After each Vietnamese language training course for overseas teachers in other countries, what would you like to convey?

Teaching Vietnamese language to generations of overseas Vietnamese has specific requirements in terms of content and methodology, especially when teaching original culture of Vietnam.

The training courses carry innumerable valuable meanings in both the humane spirit and the mission to teach Vietnamese language around the world, thereby making significant contributions to the promotion of resources for the country.

Through each training course, teachers will be provided with specialized knowledge on language teaching methodology as well as Vietnamese language and culture. They can be more confident in teaching Vietnamese language to overseas Vietnamese or foreigners.

In addition to the Vietnamese language training courses, in your opinion, what needs to be done to disseminate the Vietnamese language?

The project “Day for Honouring Vietnamese Language in Vietnamese Communities Abroad in the period 2023-2030” presents countless meaningful and “globalized” activities to promulgate Vietnamese language and Vietnamese culture to the world, for instance maintaining summer camps for overseas children, holding contests to find Vietnamese language ambassadors, and organizing Vietnamese language and Vietnamese culture training channels for foreigners.

In the near future, for the first time in Vietnam, Vietnam National University-Hanoi is going to launch a global-scale portal. The portal will be readily equipped with sufficient data to be ready to teach Vietnamese language to 5.3 million overseas Vietnamese in line with the six-level Vietnamese Language Proficiency Framework from level 1 to level 6. This is an unprecedented event.
