Leaders’ activities

On December 22, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and President Nguyen Xuan Phuc sent messages of greetings to President of the Republic of Korea (RoK) Yoon Suk Yeol on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties (December 22, 1992 - 2022). Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also extended his congratulations to his RoK counterpart Han Duck Soo, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue sent greetings to Speaker of the RoK National Assembly Kim Jin Pyo.They stressed that the upgrading of the relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership, made during the visit to the RoK by President Phuc earlier this month, is of significance as it opens up a new period of development for the ties.

On this occasion, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son exchanged greetings with RoK Foreign Minister Park Jin.

From December 21-23, during the State visit to Indonesia, President Nguyen Xuan Phuc held talks with President Joko Widodo, meetings with Indonesian parliamentary leaders, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Indonesia Puan Maharani and Deputy Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) of Indonesia Arsul Sani; met representatives of Vietnamese community in Indonesia, visited the ASEAN Secretariat Headquarters and met ASEAN Secretary-General Lim Jock Hoi, Ambassadors and Chargé d’Affaires of member states at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta.

President Nguyen Xuan Phuc also received Budiarsa Sastrawinata, President of the Indonesia - Vietnam Friendship Association; received Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) Chairman Arsjad Rasjid, leaders of some large Indonesian enterprises.

On December 23, attending the inauguration ceremony of Samsung Research and Development (R&D) Centre, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh asked Samsung Group to continue to expand investment and business activities, considering Vietnam a global strategic base in terms of production, research and development of key products for the international market. Under construction since March 2020 at a total cost of US$220 million, the 16-storey facility sits on a site of over 11,603 sq.m, becoming the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia and one of the 18 Samsung R&D Centres across the world.

On December 23, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh received Lao Minister of Industry and Commerce Malaythong Kommasith and senior officials of Lao Ministry of Energy and Mines in Hanoi. The visiting officials are in Vietnam to attend an annual cooperation and development conference between the two countries’ industry and trade, energy and mining sectors.

On December 19, on the occasion of Mr. Leo Varadkar's inauguration as Prime Minister of Ireland, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh sent a congratulatory message. The same day, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son extended congratulations to Irish Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Defence Micheál Martin.

On December 20, speaking at the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the Republic of Korea (December 22, 1992 - 2022) in Hanoi, Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan stressed that the Vietnam-RoK relationship is a model of success based on political trust, dynamic, flexible and sustainable economic cooperation and close people-to-people exchange.

Activities of the Foreign Minister

President Nguyen Xuan Phuc and a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation concluded a state visit to Indonesia at the invitation of President Joko Widodo. On this occasion, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son gave an interview to the press about the outcomes of the visit.

Bilateral activities

On December 25, the workshop to share experience between the National Assembly of Vietnam and the Cambodian parliament took place in Da Nang city. Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Chairwoman of the Cambodia - Vietnam Friendship Association Men Sam An attended the Workshop.

Vietnamese NA Vice Chairman Nguyen Duc Hai, who is also president of the Vietnam-Cambodia Parliamentary Friendship Group, highlighted the fruitful development of the bilateral relations between the two countries, saying that cooperation between the Vietnamese NA and the Cambodian parliament has been well maintained within the framework of bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

On December 21, receiving Mr. Alexander Kinshchak, Russian Foreign Minister's Special Envoy for Syria, Director General of the Middle East - North Africa Department, Russian Foreign Ministry, Deputy Foreign Minister Pham Quang Hieu affirmed that Vietnam attaches great importance to traditional friendship and good cooperation between Vietnam and Russia, highly appreciated the consultations between two Departments in charge of the Middle East - North Africa region of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the two countries.

From December 19-20, in Luang Prabang city, Laos, the 32nd annual meeting between the two Vietnam-Laos border delegations took place. The Vietnamese delegation was led by Standing Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Vu, while the Lao delegation was led by Deputy Foreign Minister Phoxay Khaykhamphithoune.

The two sides reviewed the implementation of the 2016 Agreement on Border Management Regulations, the minutes of their 31st meeting and set out future cooperation orientations. They shared a view that despite uncertain and complicated developments in the region and the world, the two nations have maintained a common borderline of peace and stability, facilitating socio-economic development and ensuring national defence-security.

Multilateral activities

On December 21, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations, met with Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on Climate Action and Just Transition Selwin Hart. Special Adviser to the UN Selwin Hart affirmed that Vietnam is playing an important role in the global efforts in response to climate change and wished Vietnam to continue sharing its experience and success lessons on energy transition.

On December 19, the 20th East Asia Forum (EAF-20), with the theme "Celebrating 25 years of ASEAN+3 cooperation: Reviving together, growing together towards inclusive, equitable and sustainable development in East Asia”, was held in Khanh Hoa province. The event attracted the participation of officials, representatives and scholars from 10 ASEAN member countries, China, Japan, the Republic of Korea (RoK) and the ASEAN Deputy Secretary-General. Ambassador Vu Ho, Acting Head of SOM ASEAN Vietnam highlighted the significance of the EAF-20 held on the occasion of the 25th founding anniversary of ASEAN+3 (China, Japan and the RoK).

Results of discussions at the event will be submitted to senior officials of ASEAN+3 countries to set specific orientations and measures to further deepen ASEAN+3 cooperation in the new period.
