National Conference on Vietnam’s Foreign Policy and Diplomacy in the New Era

National Scientific Conference on "Vietnam’s Foreign Affairs and Diplomacy in the New Era: Era of National Rise" is going to be hosted at the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam.

The conference is expected to welcome over 250 attendees, including senior representatives from various ministries, agencies, and departments, including the Office of the Party Central Committee, Party Central Committee's Commission for Policies and Strategies and Commission for Information, Education and Mass Mobilisation; Ministry of National Defence, Ministry of Public Security, Ministry of Industry and Trade, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Ministry of Science and Technology, Central Council of Theoretical Studies, Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, and leaders from several provinces and enterprises, along with a large number of experts and scholars from research institutes nationwide.

During working session with Foreign Ministry in August 2024, General Secretary To Lam, who was concurrently holding the position of Vietnam’s President at the time, emphasized that in the new era, Vietnam’s diplomacy must rise to new heights to fulfill its glorious responsibilities, position itself as a "pioneering force" playing a crucial role in national development and safeguarding.

Thus, it is clear that in the new era, foreign policy and diplomacy also bring new mission, commensurate with new stature and position of the country. National scientific conference, therefore, has an important meaning, identifying new content of Vietnam’s foreign policy and diplomacy in the new era; at the same time, analyzing international trends directly affecting Vietnam from now to 2030.

Sharing with The World and Vietnam Report before conference, Dr. Nguyen Hung Son, Acting President of the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, emphasized three important meanings of the upcoming scientific conference.

Firstly, General Secretary To Lam has made it a priority to call on entire nation to unite and step into a new era— an era of national growth, development and breakthrough. This call ensures that all citizens and sectors take responsibility for contributing and working together to implement major policies of the Party and State. Similarly, foreign policy and diplomacy sectors are urged to find the most effective means to contribute to common cause. The conference will explore how diplomacy can play its part in country’s new development drive.

Secondly, General Secretary To Lam has assigned task of building new foreign policy framework to external relations and diplomacy sectors for this new era. The duties of foreign policy and diplomacy in the new era are not only to contribute to national interests, but also create a worthy position for Vietnam in world politics, global economy and in human civilization. This is a huge mission of Vietnam’s foreign policy and diplomacy. The conference will aim to find measures for foreign and diplomatic sectors to realize that great mission.

Third, the conference will discuss world situation with very fast changes. Many leaders think that the world is entering a “turning point”, entering a new stage. Even with opinions, the world is entering new era.

Therefore, the foreign and diplomatic sectors must identify the era and the "surrounding" that the world is about to enter, thereby identifying factors affecting Vietnam. The conference will contribute to answering the question of how Vietnam can realize the era reaching out in a volatile world.
