NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan met European Parliament President Antonio Tajani during her April 2019 visit.

The Standing Committee requested on April 1 that the Prime Minister instruct relevant ministries and agencies to work closely with the State President’s Office and National Assembly bodies to finalize necessary documents concerning the EVFTA to be submitted to the committee for consideration.

According to the committee, Vietnamese Party, State and National Assembly have affirmed strong determination to ratify the trade pact at the earliest possible time.

During a working visit to Europe in March 2019, NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan assured her European parliament leaders that Vietnam creates the best possible conditions for foreign investment and business activities in the country. She also expressed hope that the European-Vietnam free trade agreement (EVFTA) and the Europe-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) would be ratified very soon for the sake of strategic interests of both sides.

The European Parliament voted for the two pacts at its plenary session on February 12. The European Council on March 30 signed a decision ratifying the EVFTA, paving the way for the agreement to come into force.

The EVFTA will take effect after it is ratified by the Vietnam National Assembly and 30 days after the two sides complete the procedures to notify each other.
