NA Chairman Tran Thanh Man meets with Director General of the UN Office at Geneva

WVR - In the afternoon of July 29 (local time), at the United Nations Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, on the occasion of attending the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man had a meeting with Tatiana Valovaya, Director-General of the United Nations (UN) Office at Geneva.

During the meeting, NA Chairman Tran Thanh Man appreciated the leadership role of the Director-General and the important contributions of the UN Office in maintaining international peace and security, promoting and ensuring human rights, eradicating poverty, and implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) globally.

Emphasizing Vietnam’s foreign policy of multilateralism, diversification, and proactive and active participation in promoting peace, friendship, cooperation, and sustainable development, the Chairman affirmed that Vietnam strongly supports multilateralism and will continue to engage and contribute more actively to UN activities.

Chairman Tran Thanh Man stated that Vietnam is seeking re-election to the UN Human Rights Council for the 2026–2028 term. If elected, Vietnam will carry out many activities and initiatives to enhance the role of the Council amid the current volatile and challenging international context.

On this occasion, the Chairman expressed appreciation for the cooperation and active support of the Director-General and UN agencies toward Vietnam's national development efforts; and shared Vietnam’s achievements in promoting gender equality, particularly the participation of women in the National Assembly and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Welcoming recent efforts to reform the UN system, Chairman Tran Thanh Man affirmed that Vietnam will continue to cooperate closely and make significant contributions to improving the efficiency and adaptability of the world’s largest international organization. He also requested that Director-General Tatiana Valovaya facilitate opportunities for Vietnamese staff and citizens to work at UN agencies.

Director-General Tatiana Valovaya thanked Vietnam for its strong support for the UN’s activities in Geneva, including being a frontrunner in responding to the initiative to exhibit 17 prominent women contributing to the implementation of the SDGs.

Ms. Tatiana Valovaya also praised the active role and contributions of Vietnam’s Ambassador, Head of Mission, and the Vietnamese Delegation in Geneva, as well as their participation in common efforts such as the Advisory Board for the Restoration of Historic Sites at the UN Headquarters.

Both sides agreed to continue strengthening Vietnam–UN cooperation in general and particularly in activities in Geneva.

The United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) serves as the representative office of the UN Secretary-General in Geneva. It manages United Nations facilities in the city and functions as a key support and coordination body, providing services for the organization of over 10,000 meetings each year. These meetings cover a wide range of issues, including disarmament, human rights, health, and international trade.
