Learning solution for businesses in the era of AI

Generative AI will transform our world and our work in ways that we haven’t experienced since the launch of the internet, forcing businesses to upskill their employees to adapt.

That was the assessment of Alan Malcolm, Udemy’s Head of Partnerships, at the seminar A.I and macro shifts - Challenges and opportunities to reshape Learning and Development, co-organized by FUNiX and Udemy on March 2 in Ho Chi Minh city.

The event was a space for leaders, managers, experts in HR, L&D (Learning and Development) to exchange ideas and share experiences in upskilling their workforce to adapt in the era of AI.

Malcolm’s presentation showed some startling statistics. McKinsey estimates that 30% of the hours worked today could be automated in 7 years. A study done by IBM also shows that 40% of workers will need to re-skill over the next 3 years as a result of implementing AI and automation.

Most remarkably, the growth of Generative AI extends AI’s reach into non-technical fields such as marketing, HR, sales, etc. “Employees across all levels and roles will need a broad understanding of what AI is, what it can do and will need to develop the skills to be able to use it effectively”, said Malcolm.

An expert with decades of L&D experience, Malcolm believed that in this “brave new world”, businesses must quickly train their talents to harness the power of AI. By driving a culture of continuous learning, promoting innovation and skill development, and aligning learning initiatives with strategic objectives, leaders can enable the organization to adapt swiftly to change, explore new possibilities, and stay ahead of the competition. By contrast, the cost of inaction will be obvious - less profit, slower product development, loss of talent, of market share, etc.

At the seminar, Malcolm introduced Udemy Business, a learning solution which offers corporate customers a robust employee training and development platform. Udemy Business offers a collection of courses curated from the Udemy marketplace and continually updated to keep pace with industry changes. Just two weeks after the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, courses on the chatbot were released on Udemy. Till date, there are more than 1.200 courses on Generative AI with two millions learner enrollments.

At the seminar, Nguyen Thi Minh Thu, Principal - Korn Ferry Vietnam, presented major trends in the L&D landscape. According to Thu, companies are designing L&D programs with increasing focus on identifying and closing skills gaps, developing mobile content to improve accessibility, using gamification to boost learner engagement, etc. “Another trend is the use of AI to provide real-time instruction and personalized learning pathways”, Thu said.

Providing a perspective from a local business, Pham Thi Thu Thao, Head of Talent, Learning& Organization Development, VNG Management L&D at VNG, shared that the company is taking the first steps in incorporating AI into their L&D program, with Udemy Business being one of the platforms of choice. In the context of the current economic downturn and subsequent challenges in meeting business goals, she considered the skill to leverage AI technologies to be essential.

“AI will not replace people but people who use AI to do their jobs will replace those who don’t”, said Thao.
