As ASEAN Chair 2024, how does Laos evaluate the need for AFF 2024? Kindly share your expectations about the Forum?

The AFF 2024 is a significant initiative organized by the Diplomatic Academy of Viet Nam under the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Viet Nam. As the ASEAN Chair 2024, Laos recognizes the importance of this forum as a framework for policymakers, experts, and representatives from ASEAN member states and international partners to engage in in-depth, comprehensive discussions on critical issues related to the future development of ASEAN.

The AFF 2024 provides a valuable platform for shaping a sustainable development roadmap for ASEAN, fostering collaboration, and addressing critical challenges and opportunities ahead for the region. As the ASEAN Chair 2024, Laos looks forward to meaningful discussions and outcomes from this important forum.

How do you evaluate Viet Nam’s efforts in its collaboration with other members to develop ASEAN Community?

It have been instrumental in advancing the ASEAN Community’s goals, fostering economic integration, and promoting regional cooperation. Let’s explore some key aspects of Viet Nam’s role:

First, Viet Nam became a full member of ASEAN on July 28, 1995. Since then, it has actively participated in ASEAN’s initiatives and agreements. Viet Nam’s accession to various ASEAN agreements demonstrates its commitment to economic cooperation, trade liberalization, and the opening up of its economy.

Second, Viet Nam’s impressive economic growth is a testament to its vigorous drive toward reforming the economy. The Doi Moi economic reform process, initiated in 1986, paved the way for Viet Nam’s transition from a centrally planned economy to a socialist market economy. Foreign direct investment (FDI) has flowed into Viet Nam. The industrial output has also seen significant growth.

Third, Viet Nam’s international trade has expanded rapidly and Viet Nam’s main exports include crude oil, textiles and garments, rice, coffee, and other products.

Fourth, as the ASEAN Chair in 1998, 2010 and 2020, Viet Nam has led and coordinated joint efforts to address regional challenges. Viet Nam focused on themes such as cohesion and responsiveness. Viet Nam actively collaborated with ASEAN partners to prevent the spread of diseases and mitigate socio-economic impacts, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fifth, Viet Nam supports close cooperation between ASEAN and the United Nations (UN) in addressing regional issues. It emphasizes the importance of collaboration in resolving general issue and humanitarian aid efforts.

Sixth, Viet Nam’s role within ASEAN has evolved from adjusting to advocating. Its commitment to regional stability, economic growth, and inclusivity positions it as an active contributor to ASEAN’s community-building efforts.
