Int'l Organization for Migration is ready to strengthen cooperation with Vietnam: IOM Director General

On November 14, Ambassador Le Thi Tuyet Mai, Head of the Permanent Representative Delegation of Vietnam to the United Nations, World Trade Organization and other international organizations in Geneva had a meeting with Ms. Amy Pope, new Director General of IOM.

At the meeting, Ambassador Le Thi Tuyet Mai congratulated Ms. Amy Pope when taking on the important position of Director General of IOM, becoming the first female Director General of IOM from October 1, 2023.

Ambassador Le Thi Tuyet Mai also reaffirmed Vietnam's support and commitment to promoting cooperation with IOM in implementing the Global Compact on Migration (GCM); Vietnam's ministries, departments and branches always prioritize, pay attention and coordinate to ensure an interdisciplinary approach in solving migration challenges.

Some areas of cooperation include protecting the rights of migrant workers, ensuring the health and medical access of migrants, improving the public’s ability to adapt and respond to climate change. In addition, Vietnam also actively participates in international cooperation mechanisms on migration within the frameworks of ASEAN, ASEM, and APEC.

IOM Director General Amy Pope welcomed Vietnam’s efforts and achievements in the field of migration in general and in implementing the Global Compact on Migration (GCM) in particular.

The General Director of IOM said that improving the ability to respond and withstand climate change and natural disasters for migrants is a top priority for IOM's activities in the coming time. She also realized that IOM and Vietnam have a lot of potential to strengthen cooperation at both international mechanisms, especially in the fields of labor migration, linking solving migration challenges with implementing development goals, enhancing the ability to respond to climate change.

From October 1, 2023, Ms. Amy Pope (US nationality) officially takes office, becoming the first female Director General of IOM after being elected by member countries in the June 2023 election.

Ms. Amy Pope's priorities as IOM Director-General include: strengthening support for migrants and vulnerable groups with measures on the ground; strengthening the participation and engagement of member countries and the private sector in dealing with challenges related to migration, promoting policies appropriate to each member state; take advantage of IOM's database system; prioritizing climate change-related migration challenges on the IOM discussion agenda; continueing to reform IOM's budget program.
