General Secretary To Lam holds phone talks with RoK President Lee Jae Myung

WVR - On the afternoon of January 30, at the Central Party Headquarters, General Secretary To Lam held a phone talks with Republic of Korea's (RoK) President Lee Jae Myung.

During the talks, President Lee Jae Myung congratulated the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam on its success and General Secretary To Lam on being re-elected as the General Secretary of the 14th Party Central Committee. He expressed confidence that under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam, headed by General Secretary To Lam, Vietnam will continue to achieve its strategic national development goals, including the aim of achieving double-digit economic growth in the coming period.

President Lee Jae Myung emphasized the importance of relations with Vietnam, considering Vietnam a key partner in implementing South Korea's foreign policies in the region. He highlighted that General Secretary To Lam's state visit to South Korea in August 2025 significantly contributed to enhancing mutual understanding between the two peoples, strengthening political trust, and creating numerous cooperation opportunities across various fields, thereby deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between South Korea and Vietnam. He affirmed continued close collaboration with General Secretary To Lam to further develop the bilateral relationship in a robust, substantive, and effective manner.

For his part, General Secretary To Lam expressed gratitude to Republic of Korea for promptly sending congratulatory messages to the 14th National Party Congress and sincerely thanked President Lee Jae Myung for his congratulatory message on his re-election as General Secretary of the 14th Party Central Committee. Sharing the significant outcomes of the 14th Congress, General Secretary To Lam emphasized that the Congress fulfilled its historic responsibility by deeply summarizing the practical experiences of 40 years of renewal and setting forth major directions for the country's development. The overarching goal set by the 14th Congress for the next phase is to strive for an average GDP growth rate of 10% or more annually from 2026 to 2030, with a per capita GDP of approximately $8,500 by 2030, thereby creating a "launchpad" for Vietnam to successfully become a developed, high-income country.

Congratulating Republic of Korea on its significant development achievements, General Secretary To Lam expressed confidence that under President Lee Jae Myung's leadership, Republic of Korea will continue to thrive. He emphasized that Vietnam consistently regards RoK as one of its top priority partners in foreign policy, affirming that Vietnam will remain a reliable, stable, and responsible partner in the international community, working with South Korea to effectively implement agreed-upon commitments.

Both sides agreed to continue strengthening political trust as a solid foundation for enhancing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership by increasing high-level and various-level exchanges, expanding cooperation in defense and security, and implementing defense industry and military trade projects. They affirmed efforts to create breakthroughs in economic cooperation – the main pillar of bilateral relations – encouraging South Korean enterprises to expand investment in Vietnam, especially in semiconductors, high-tech electronic equipment manufacturing, and developing specialized industrial production complexes through projects by major South Korean corporations. They also committed to facilitating trade, opening markets for each other's goods, and striving to achieve a bilateral trade turnover target of 150 billion USD by 2030. Furthermore, they agreed to enhance cooperation in science and technology – a new pillar of bilateral cooperation – and continue expanding cultural, tourism, and local cooperation, continuously fostering friendship and understanding between the two peoples.

Thanking President Lee Jae Myung for congratulating Vietnam on its third-place finish in the 2026 AFC U23 Championship, General Secretary To Lam highly appreciated Republic of Korea's effective contributions to sports, especially the Korean experts, including football coaches, who have significantly contributed to the development of Vietnamese sports. He emphasized the desire for deeper cooperation and partnership between the two countries to achieve greater accomplishments, becoming a symbol of bilateral relations.

Regarding multilateral cooperation, both sides agreed to work closely and support each other at regional and international forums of mutual interest. They committed to coordinating efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region, including the Korean Peninsula.

General Secretary To Lam requested Republic of Korea to actively share experiences and support Vietnam in successfully organizing the APEC Summit 2027 in Phu Quoc and to expedite the organization of the Mekong – Korea Summit.

On this occasion, General Secretary To Lam extended a cordial invitation to President Lee Jae Myung to visit Vietnam soon. President Lee Jae Myung accepted the invitation with pleasure.
