At the invitation of the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam To Lam, along with a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation, will pay a state visit to the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka from May 7-8, 2026.

Vietnam and Sri Lanka established diplomatic relations on July 21, 1970. The two countries maintain a traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation.

Political parties in Sri Lanka hold a favourable view and value their relationship with Vietnam, considering Vietnam a successful economic development model to learn from. Sri Lanka has recognized Vietnam as having a fully-fledged market economy.

The Vietnamese community in Sri Lanka currently numbers around 200 people, including Vietnamese women married to locals, monks and nuns studying and practicing at universities/Buddhist institutions, workers sent by Vietnamese companies on fixed-term contracts, and others engaged in various service industries.

Despite facing many difficulties, the community remains oriented towards the homeland, actively participating in charitable activities and movements initiated by the Embassy.
