Enhancing artifact collection and completing exhibition content for Truong Sa Museum

The collection efforts should not only focus on reviewing the inventory at various agencies and units but also widely promote the donation, provision, and transfer of artifacts and documents related to Truong Sa.

Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Khanh Hoa Province, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Ha, recently chaired a meeting to review the progress and implementation plans of component projects under the Truong Sa Museum Construction Project.

At the meeting, the collection of documents and artifacts was identified as a foundational task that needs to be prioritized from the outset to support the development of exhibition content and space.

The Truong Sa Museum Construction Project was approved by the Provincial People's Committee under Decision No. 1997/QD-UBND. The exhibition content is structured around major themes, focusing on introducing the natural characteristics, strategic position and stature, history of formation and development, and the vitality of Truong Sa; while also clarifying Truong Sa's role in the economic, cultural, and social development at sea.

The exhibition space is expected to conclude with iconic images of Truong Sa and the Truong Sa Museum Park, associated with a memorial space for the Gac Ma soldiers.

In executing the plan to survey and collect documents and artifacts, the Provincial Museum has compiled a list of 1,154 documents and artifacts for research and exhibition content development. Among these, 426 items have been transferred by some agencies and units in the form of documents and digital images, while 728 items have yet to be transferred.

According to the Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, the initial survey and collection results only partially meet the requirements of the proposed exhibition themes. Therefore, Project 1 “Research and Collect Documents and Artifacts for Truong Sa Museum Exhibition” needs to be implemented more systematically, with specific content, tasks, lists, and budget identified.

The collection process should also be closely linked to exhibition design requirements, ensuring the selection of necessary documents and artifacts, avoiding scattered investment or collecting content not suitable for the museum's themes.

For Project 3, which includes “Research and Develop Museum Exhibition Content” and “Design and Construct Museum Exhibitions,” the Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism proposes that the Provincial People's Committee allow the hiring of a consulting unit, the Institute of Monuments Conservation under the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism. This unit has a team of specialized experts with experience in advising and implementing many museum projects and is currently advising on the preservation and value enhancement project of Dien Khanh Citadel.

At the meeting, Vice Chairman Nguyen Thanh Ha emphasized that artifacts are the foundation for forming the exhibition content of Truong Sa Museum. Therefore, collection efforts should be expanded, not only stopping at reviewing inventories at agencies and units but also widely promoting the donation, provision, and transfer of artifacts and documents related to Truong Sa.

The Vice Chairman requested the Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism to advise the Provincial People's Committee on developing a plan to launch the collection, reception, and donation of artifacts with concise content, clear targets, and implementation methods. Additionally, a letter of invitation should be prepared for the Provincial People's Committee to send to agencies, organizations, and individuals inside and outside the province, focusing on relatives of those who have worked, fought, and been associated with Truong Sa.

Publicity efforts are also required to be implemented regularly and continuously. The province's press agencies will participate in promoting, building content, and special sections introducing the initiative, invitation letter, and encouraging people, organizations, and individuals to provide and donate artifacts to Truong Sa Museum. The initiative should be carried out widely, targeting organizations and individuals in various localities and maintained over a long period.

The Vice Chairman requested that Projects 1 and 3 be implemented with close coordination, ensuring that the collection efforts meet the exact and sufficient requirements for documents and artifacts serving the exhibition content. Along with this, the advisory and appraisal mechanisms and organizations should continue to be refined to ensure the scientific, historical, cultural, and effective aspects of the Truong Sa Museum Construction Project.
