Proactive and Creative
We serve at the Permanent Mission of Viet Nam at the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva (Switzerland), a major centre of multilateral diplomacy and most dynamic centre of global governance. From this important multilateral diplomacy hub, Viet Nam is promoting multilateral diplomacy, participating in the application and development of international law, promoting national interests, and enhancing the country's role and prestige.
First, we promote our active participation and uphold policies and achievements of Viet Nam in human rights, socio-economic and other fields, upholding multilateralism and the role of the United Nations as well as other international organizations in Geneva.
Second, Viet Nam has been proactively presenting its candidatures and taking on the role of membership of specific bodies of several important international organizations, such as the Human Rights Council, the World Health Organization (WHO), the Department of World Intellectual Property Rights (WIPO), International Labor Organization (ILO), Universal Postal Union (UPU)... On the basis of its achievement on human rights as well as its active participation over the past time, Viet Nam is now an ASEAN candidate for the Human Rights Council for the term 2023-2025.
Third, we have proactively proposed annual resolutions of the UNHRC on climate change and human rights, focusing on the rights of vulnerable groups, and co-chaired the annual discussion on climate change and human rights at the UNHRC.
Fourth, we strive to promote international law application, promoting the implementation of multilateral treaties within the framework of the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, as well as joining the negotiation of new rules in new fields, resolution of complaints, trade disputes at the World Trade Organization (WTO)…
Fifth, the Ambassador, Permanent Representative has actively taken on the role of the chair, or membership of a number of international organizations in Geneva, such as the Chairman of the WTO Working Group on Trade and Technology Transfer for the term 2021- 2022, Vice President and Rapporteur of the Consumer Protection Expert Group Meeting (2021) within the framework of UNCTAD,... thereby making contribution to the enhancing of the image of Viet Nam’s active contribution to the work of these international organizations.

Highlighting multilateral diplomacy
In 2021, despite the complicated developments of the Covid-19 pandemic, our Permanent Mission has proactively promoted multilateral diplomacy with several important milestones.
First, the Permanent Mission has actively contributed to the success of vaccine diplomacy, promoting health cooperation with WHO and related mechanisms. Thanks to the campaigns at multilateral and bilateral diplomatic channels by Vietnamese Diplomatic Missions in Geneva and in other countries around the world as well as by agencies in our country, by the end of November, through COVAX, there have been about 27 million doses of vaccines delivered to Viet Nam (out of a total of about 39 million doses of vaccines committed by COVAX in 2021), thus helping to greatly reduce the number of cases of infections and deaths from Covid-19 in the country recently.
Second, with the active participation of our Permanent Mission at the Congress of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), in Ivory Coast (August 2021), and the close coordination of the Ministry of Information and Communications, the results were beyond expectations when Viet Nam was elected for the first time as a member of the Postal Operations Council (POC), and Co-Chair of the Postal Financial Services Committee of the POC under the UPU.
Third and most prominent highlight is the historic official visit of H.E. President Nguyen Xuan Phuc to important international organizations in Geneva in November 2021, together with meetings with the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations Amina Mohammed; the Director-Generals of UNOG, WHO, WTO, WIPO; and CEOs of GAVI, COVAX…
The series of high-level multilateral diplomatic activities demonstrates Viet Nam's strong support for international efforts for response to and recovery from COVID-19, maintaining global supply chains, strengthening the multilateral trading system, promoting innovation, ensuring inclusive and sustainable development, and sending a strong message of Viet Nam's active participation in international solidarity to tackle pressing global challenges.
