Canada is not far

Graduating from the Hanoi University of Transport and Communications in 2004, Hien was fortunate to be awarded the Francophonie University Association’s scholarship to study in France and later received the master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering from Marne-La-Vallée University and École des Ponts ParisTech in 2005.

Three years later, the Vietnamese engineer successfully defended his PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering and Material Science at the Paris XIII University and pursued postdoc studies at École Polytechnique Paris, before moving to Québec (Canada) to work at the Laval University. He became a researcher of the Aluminium Technology Center, National Research Council of Canada from 2009-2011.

In 2013, Hien confidently started his own business in Montréal with the establishment of Stechco company. So far, after 6 years of development, he and his team have consulted and designed more than 1,000 real estates and construction projects, especially including consulting projects in earthquake prevention in Canada, the US and Vietnam.

Dr. Bui Quang Hien expressed, prior to deciding to work in Canada, he determined to stay there for a few years and then return to Europe or Vietnam. However, while living in Canada, he realized that the environment here was very friendly to immigrants who were offered favorable conditions to develop well.

He chose Montréal as the settlement as it is a medium city with the mixed characteristics of the Europe and the America – where both English and French could be used.

Connected by… football!

Dr. Bui Quang Hien joined a number of R&D projects funded by the governments of France, Canada, Hungary and Vietnam. With the collaboration of friends and colleagues, he has published more than 50 technical reports, international scientific journals and books.

Hien is passionate about football and desirous of contributing to the development of sports and cultural activities in the Vietnamese community in Canada. This motivated him and his friends to organized many football activities for the Vietnamese community in Canada, for example King Cup in Montréal, football championship of the Vietnamese Students’ Association in Ottawa, Lac Hong Cup in Ottawa, Lac Hong Montréal 2018,… which were highly evaluated in term of professional quality.

Recently, Hien was the head of organizing committee of the Lac Hong Montréal Football Championship 2019 for the Vietnamese community in Eastern Canadian cities. With the participation of 12 men’s football teams, 2 women’s teams and 4 children’s teams, the championship created a helpful and meaningful playground in the community and attracted about 1,000 Vietnamese Canadians, Vietnamese people who living in Canada, and native Canadians from a lot of cities.

Potential land for Vietnamese people

Developing the career in a foreign country, Dr. Bui Quang Hien has worked passionately, self-explored, learned, acquired knowledge to accummulate as much as experience in a short time as well as adapt easily to a new environment.

In his view, the working environment in the North America always requires very high skills to create good competitive products. As a result, what he is building in Montréal is just initial success.

He also said that in the North America, there has been a shortage of high quality workers as well as basic labour resource. In 2018, Canada welcomed 321,000 immigrants. According to statistics in Canada alone, there have been approximately 300,000 Vietnamese Canadians living here.

Dr. Bui Quang Hien shared about the plan to establish the Vietnamese Business Association in Canada with the desire to help businesses in Canada to seek investment opportunities in Vietnam and to support Vietnamese businesses to expand their investment and do business in Canada.

His Stechco has been actively seeking business opportunities and cooperation with partners in Vietnam to implement infrastructure construction projects in Vietnam.

“Canada owns world leading Vietnamese-origin experts in health, law, pharmaceutical technology, food, environment and sciences. The Vietnamese state should have good policies to attract these wonderful intellectuals to develop the country”, Hien said.

“If you have a dream to work in Canada, Vietnamese young people need to improve foreign language, knowledge, skills and ethics”, he added.
