Sharing with media right after the voting result was announced, the Ambassador talked about the advantages and challenges Vietnam faced while runing for the seat.

Firstly, the country had to deal with many difficulties in promoting its bid because of the large number of candidates, of which the Asia-Pacific region alone has seven.

According to the Ambassador, human rights is one of the three main pillars of the UN, along with peace and security, and development, and the UNHRC serves as the main body of the UN in implementing human rights orientations. Therefore, countries attache importance to and drastically join the mechanism.

Secondly, Vietnam launched its candidacy the latest among candidates, and the two years of the COVID-19 pandemic had prevented the country’s campaigning efforts, which had just been conducted since early 2022.

The Ambassador also figured out differences between countries' approaches to the human rights, and Vietnam had to find the common points to be approved by other countries, making them acknowledge Vietnam's contributions to the joint efforts.

However, as stated by the Ambassador, Vietnam has advantages in its bid.

First, Vietnam was the only candidate of ASEAN and then supported by the bloc, which reflects the significance of solidarity and consensus within the ten group member countries.

Second, Vietnam has won confidence of countries thanks to its economic achievements, in which people are put at the centre and considered as a target of and driving force for development; along with its responsible contributions to UN mechanisms over the past two years, said the diplomat.

Third advantage came from the engagement of the entire political system, ministries and agencies, and the close supervision and direct participation of high-ranking delegation in campaigning.

The communication work has also been stepped up, helping Vietnamese people and international friends understand more about Vietnam’s candidacy and its commitments to promoting human rights domestically and globally, the Ambassador noted.
