On May 15th, the Ambassadorial Meeting of the Group of Friends for Education and Lifelong Learning took place in New York. Attending the meeting were United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammad, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education Stefania Giannini, Ambassadors, Heads of Delegations, and representatives from nearly 30 UN member states.

Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammad acknowledged the important role of the Group of Friends in promoting education issues within the UN agenda, emphasizing the need to focus on ensuring financial resources for education, caring for the rights of teachers, and leveraging digital transformation in education to realign with Sustainable Development Goal 4 on education.

Representatives of the Group of Friends member countries also shared their priorities in advancing education at upcoming UN forums.

At the session, Ambassador Giang also spoke highly of the group’s efforts in pushing ahead with contents and commitments relating to education.

The Ambassador appreciated the Group of Friends for promoting many substantive, important commitments related to education in the draft Outcome Document of the upcoming Future Summit, the most significant event of the United Nations in 2024, and proposed that the group continue to promote a common stance within other frameworks.

He suggested holding activities between the group and UN member countries to step up dialogues and share information, initiatives and experience in education.

Launched on January 24, 2020, the Group champions advocacy and outreach on the global commitments on education, including through concrete contribution to intergovernmental processes as well as the organisation of high-level and expert-level meetings.
