The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) has provided an important economic forum for 21 member economies in the Asia-Pacific Region since its establishment 34 years ago in 1989. Vietnam’s entry into APEC in 1998 has helped facilitate its rapid socio-economic development and economic integration to the global economy, and the international market has also benefited in Vietnam’s membership into the APEC.
I think that given the challenges facing the international economy, APEC remains an effective venue and tool for continuous meaningful dialogues among government leaders, the business sector and the academia. This year’s APEC theme of “Creating a Resilient and Sustainable Future for All” dovetails with the priorities of both Vietnam and the Philippines in ensuring sustainable economic growth.
Since both of our economies – Vietnam and the Philippines – remain largely vulnerable to climate change, energy insecurity, and supply chain shocks, our shared perspective, and recommendations will provide leaders from member economies with valuable and practical inputs. The common experiences and constraints faced by our private entities will also guide APEC economic leaders in crafting business policies and corporate models that are more responsive to challenges and ensure resilience, inclusiveness, sustainability for our workforce and for the environment.

Viet Nam has been highly regarded in the ASEAN community as an active and valuable partner for cohensiveness and stability contributing to the overall success of the ASEAN since its membership in 1995. It has also become an important member of the APEC since 1998 playing responsible roles in several APEC-related forums, including its successful handling of enormous responsibilities as the APEC chair in 2006 and 2017.
Vietnam’s active and responsible participation in these multilateral organizations demonstrate Vietnam’s appreciation for its important and increasing responsibility in the region and in the international community. The Philippines looks favorably towards Vietnnam’s role in these forums given our shared commitment and efforts towards regional peace, stability of rules-based institutions, sustainable development, and inclusiveness.
Our strategic partnership with Vietnam transcends economic cooperation. Both the Philippines and Vietnam share a common aspiration to ensure adherence to international law and peaceful resolution of any dispute. Both have primordial objective, which is to ensure peace, stability, security and freedom of navigation and aviation in the region while respecting and recognizing our respective national interests. These common aspirations are part of the foundation of our deep and long-lasting relationship with Vietnam.
Sharing with the press recently, Philippine Ambassador to Vietnam Meynardo Los Banos Montealegre expressed his impression with the vibrant activities of various governmental agencies in Vietnam. Programs and projects stalled by Covid-19 in the past two years have been restarted with stronger and more enthusiastic participation from officials, employees and even the public. While Vietnam continues to be the Philippines' leading and reliable source of imported rice, two-way trade between the two countries can also be further improved in items such as electronics, semiconductors, equipment and spare parts. The Philippine Ambassador wants to see more Philippine companies and brands present in Vietnam. According to the Ambassador, dialogue mechanisms are very important to ensure the two countries maintain a strong diplomatic relationship, which is the Philippines' top priority in the strategic partnership with Vietnam. |
