Resuscitation and Emergency Department of Cho Ray Hospital: Dedicated and responsible in tackling the COVID-19 pandemic

Fighting with the death deities for hours and minutes to win the patient's life, high-level work intensity, great pressure, but the medical staff of the Resuscitation and Emergency Department of Cho Ray Hospital are not petrified. They always preserve and promote medical ethics, really being a fulcrum for the patients in moments of life and death.

From 2020 up to now, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic spreading on a large scale, especially in Ho Chi Minh City, the Resuscitation and Emergency Department of Cho Ray Hospital has been so stretched due to the rising number of COVID-19 patients. The Department's doctors and nurses have worked hard day and night, taking care of patients to promptly handle bad situations and minimise the fatalities.

During the past two years, the Resuscitation and Emergency Department's health workers have set examples of frontline warriors in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

In March 2020, many members of the Department joined the rapid response team of Cho Ray Hospital to support the epidemic prevention and control and provide professional guidance in the provinces of Tay Ninh, Bac Lieu, and Binh Thuan. From April to July 2020, the Department's medical team directly participated in the treatment of the British pilot patient (Patient No.91) at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City, then continued to treat and care for that patient at Cho Ray Hospital until hospital discharge (July 11, 2020).

From July to September 2020, the Resuscitation and Emergency Department sent a team of doctors to participate in epidemic prevention and control in Da Nang and Quang Nam. In Da Nang (from July 24, 2020 - August 31, 2020), the doctors and nurses joined the Cho Ray Hospital's No. 1 rapid response team led by Level 2 Medical Specialist Tran Thanh Linh in the treatment of patient No.416 and then in the prevention and control of the pandemic onset.

In the first phase, the team supported the treatment of critically ill patients at the Resuscitation and Emergency Department (Da Nang Hospital), where they had developed plans to clear out the disease epicenters in Da Nang General Hospital and participated in emergency assistance and patient transport from the neighboring hospitals.

After that, the team urgently established 2 Resuscitation & Emergency units at Da Nang Lung Hospital which admitted critical COVID-19 cases. Here, the team coordinated with the rapid response teams No.3, 4, 5, 6 of Cho Ray Hospital to treat and care for critically ill patients, deploying high techniques such as ECMO, blood dialysis and simultaneously to conduct the on-site skill training for colleagues in Da Nang.

Over 6 weeks of efforts together with the national health forces, the doctors and nurses of the Resuscitation and Emergency Department have helped Da Nang control the epidemic and save the lives of many patients, leaving behind them the good feelings in the hearts of the people of Da Nang.

In Quang Nam (from July to August 2020), the Resuscitation and Emergency Department sent a team of doctors to join the 2nd rapid response team led by Level 1 Medical Specialist Doctor Huynh Quang Dai to participate in the treatment and set up the resuscitation and threading unit at Quang Nam Central General Hospital.

In February 2021, when the epidemic broke out in Hai Duong, Gia Lai, the Department's task force continued to participate in rapid response teams No. 1 and No. 2 to Gia Lai for 5 days. They completed the establishment of a 300-bed field hospital in Gia Lai to treat COVID-19 patients.

Since April 2021, the Department worked with authorities in Kien Giang on the construction of a COVID-19 resuscitation center in Ha Tien and a field hospital to treat COVID-19 patients in the province, and also sent doctors to support the treatment of severe COVID-19 patients in Dak Lak province.

In May 2021, the COVID-19 epidemic broke out strongly in Bac Giang, 2 doctors and 1 nurse of the Department and 10 other members of Cho Ray Hospital were dispatched to the province.The team was the main task force responsible for treating the patients at the Resuscitation Center - Lung Hospital of Bac Giang, saving the lives of many critically ill patients, including those who had the first ECMO technique performed in the Northern province.

In June 2021, the doctors and nurses from the Resuscitation and Emergency Department participated in the treatment of many serious and critical patients at the Department of Tropical Diseases and the Resuscitation & Emergency Department Zone D, Cho Ray Hospital, especially saving the life of a police who had been seriously infected by SARS-CoV-2 when doing his job of anti-epidemic tasks. From June to October 2021, the Department dispatched doctors to support the treatment and set up a Resuscitation unit at Long An General Hospital.

From July 14, 2021 until now, the Resuscitation and Emergency Department has been supporting the establishment of the COVID-19 Resuscitation Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City and dispatched many doctors and nurses to treat and care for serious - critical patients there. Level 2 Medical Specialist Tran Thanh Linh held the position of Deputy Professional Director of COVID-19 Resuscitation Hospital and the Head of ICU2A Department, directly participating in directing the coordination of patient admission, treatment of critically ill patients, participating in acute ECMO Outpatient care and patient transport service.

In October 2021, the Department's doctors and nurses performed the reinforcement for medical forces in Kien Giang province. After the pandemic in Ho Chi Minh City was basically kept under control, the West-southern provinces and the Central Highlands had an outbreak, the Department dispatched many doctors and nurses forming a task force from Cho Ray Hospital. They traveled to Ca Mau, Soc Trang, Dak Lak and Bac Lieu to help in disease prevention and control and directly participate in the treatment of many patients.

Following the sacred call of the Fatherland, following the "command of the heart" and the conscience of the physician, the medical staff of the Resuscitation and Emergency Department continued to extend their tireless footsteps and entered the epidemic center with the determination "We shall not come back until the pandemic is over.”

With outstanding achievements in epidemic prevention and control and treatment for COVID-19 patients, the Resuscitation and Emergency Department and many individuals were awarded Certificates of Merit from the Prime Minister, the Minister of Health.

In the coming time, the Resuscitation and Emergency Department will focus on promoting the application and perfecting of advanced techniques in emergency and resuscitation in order to increase the quality of treatment, shorten hospital stay, reduce complications, reduce medical costs and reduce mortality. The Resuscitation and Emergency Department is striving to become the largest ECMO Center in the country, to be ranked in ELSO (with Silver level).
