Promoting comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and South Africa

On March 2, the Embassy of the Republic of South Africa to Vietnam and the Institute for Africa and Middle East Studies (IAMES) jointly held the signing ceremony of Memorandum of Cooperation in celebrating 30 years of diplomatic relations between South Africa and Vietnam (December 22, 1993-2023).

Attending the signing ceremony were South African Ambassador to Vietnam Vuyiswa Tulelo, Director General of the Institute of Africa and Middle East Studies Le Phuoc Minh and representatives from the Embassy of South Africa to Vietnam, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences.

In her opening remarks, South African Ambassador Vuyiswa Tulelo stated that 2023 is an important year, marking the milestone in 30 years of Vietnam-South Africa diplomatic ties. Therefore, the activities for this special anniversary will contribute to bringing the two countries closer together, hence move towards the greater landmarks in bilateral cooperation.

According to Ambassador Vuyiswa Tulelo, Memorandum of Cooperation between the two sides shows that the bilateral relationship has continuously developed over time.

Furthermore, she also hoped that Vietnam and South Africa would take advantage of great potentials to promote comprehensive cooperation, especially in fields such as economy, trade and society, people-to-people exchanges to strengthen mutual understanding between the two countries.

For his part, Director General of IAMES Le Phuoc Minh affirmed that during the past 30 years, Vietnam and South Africa have had many achievements. However, more efforts from the two sides are needed because there is still plenty of room for Vietnam and South Africa to boost the cooperation.

He also highlighted that this special milestone is the right time to take advantage of favorable opportunities, thereby elevating Vietnam-South Africa relations higher.

Moreover, Director General Le Phuoc Minh stated that, as an institute focusing on research on South Africa, IAMES will further cooperate with the South African Embassy to Vietnam in cultivating the friendship between the two countries.

On the 30th anniversary of South Africa and Vietnam diplomatic relations, the two sides are expected to jointly organize a series of activities in 2023: Webinar "Struggle and aspiration for freedom: Sharing experience between South Africa and Vietnam”; Seminar "Cultural diversity for integration and development"; Nelson Mandela Research Competition; Youth Day, National Women's Day and Heritage Day events; Seminar "Tripartite cooperation: Mechanism for promoting ties between Vietnam, Middle Eastern and African countries".
