At the first instance, Professor Jayachandra Reddy expressed his deep sense of condolences to the people of Vietnam on the demise of Vietnam's great leader Nguyen Phu Trong, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV). There are many ambitious political leaders across the world, but very few matchups to the traits of good leadership. Undoubtedly, General Secretary Trong is one of such leaders with at most integrity and accountability to the country and Party, Prof. Reddy emphasized.

Vietnam continued to flourish under the leadership of the Party with General Secretary Trong at the helm, benefiting from the 1986 "Doi Moi" reforms that transformed Vietnam from a war-torn agrarian nation into one of Asia's fastest-growing economies. Vietnam's annual GDP growth averaged 5.8% over the last decade and managed decent growth even during the coronavirus pandemic that crushed economies elsewhere.

General Secretary Trong’s leadership has improved multiple areas to come over the challenges, some of which are the economic framework for growth and poverty reduction; creating a supportive climate for entrepreneurship; transforming the rural economy; enhancing human capital with international competence; providing efficient infrastructural facilities and services; improving environmental quality; building modem governance with IT support; and confidence building at global level.

Prof. Reddy highlighted theoretical contributions of General Secretary Trong to issues of socialism and a socialist-oriented market economy.

According to the scholar, under the leadership of General Secretary Trong, Vietnam has undergone many reforms like focusing on restructuring the economy and growth model, with emphasis given a reform of the investment model, restructure the financial and banking systems and reform and reduce the number of state-owned enterprises. Vietnam also placed priority to maintaining social welfare, stepping up the fight against corruption, accelerating administrative reform and intensifying poverty alleviation and hunger eradication activities. He expressed his belief that as a nation characterized by old-aged history and culture, diversified natural resources, young, dynamic and skillful labour force, and political and social stability, Vietnam will continue to be a market full of potentials and an ideal destination for international investors and businesses, especially countries like the United States, Japan, India, etc.

Regarding General Secretary Trong's contributions to developing relations between Vietnam and other countries, Prof. Reddy noted Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s legacy in Vietnam’s foreign policy with strong “Vietnamese bamboo” characters.

The General Secretary described “bamboo” as having “strong roots, stout trunk and flexible branches”. As such, Vietnam's diplomacy imbued with the "Vietnamese bamboo" identity in his depiction is “soft and wise but still persistent and resolute; flexible and creative but consistent, valiant and resilient against all challenges and patient in safeguarding the national interest”. Vietnam maintained its traditional ties with China, on the other hand, maintained equally good bilateral relations with the United States, Russia and India which paved a way to have a comprehensive strategic partnership with all these countries, the Professor went on.

According to Prof. Reddy, Nguyen Phu Trong’s tenure as General Secretary coincided with a period of significant change in Vietnam’s foreign policy. In addition to his political and diplomatic work, General Secretary Trong was a key figure in the CPV’s ideological education, emphasising Marxist-Leninist principles while encouraging pragmatic approaches to governance. His leadership style was characterised by a blend of firmness in principle and flexibility in tactics, allowing Vietnam to navigate complex geopolitical landscapes effectively.

Prof. Reddy shared a lot of his thoughts on the personal qualities of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and influances of these characteristics on the policy lines. He noted that General Secretary Trong was staunch follower of President Ho Chi Minh and his political ideology, strongly believing in discipline, hard work and honesty. Deply recognized the significance of the culture, General Secretary Trong inculcated that "culture is the soul of the nation". Being a scholar, General Secretary Trong has been a poet and good human being.

According to Prof. Reddy, these characters made the General Secretary to be very firm against corruption within the party and country. His writing and speeches certainly always inspire the party cadres and the people of Vietnam. General Secretary Trong used to be much disciplined with party cadres whereas very humanistic with the wellbeing of the people of the nation. As a result, the country has been experiencing major economic reforms in "Doi Moi"; foreign policy achievements in terms of "Vietnamese bamboo" identity and anti-corruption through "Blazing Furnace".

General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is a thinker, a culturist, a theoretical flag of the Party and devoted his life to the revolutionary cause of the party and nation, Prof. Reddy emphasized.
