Vital historical significance

The October Revolution, sometimes referred to as the Great October Socialist Revolution, is one of the most significant events in the history of Russia and the modern world. This is a fact acknowledged by countries around the world, and respected by the people and leaders of Russia.

For that reason, the special attention of the Russian people and international public to the upcoming 100th anniversary of the October Revolution is understandable. The importance of the event was underlined by Russian President Vladimir Putin in his annual speech to the National Assembly last December. He stressed that in 2017, Russia needs to once again look at the cause and true nature of the Revolution. These historical lessons can be used for compromise, as well as strengthening social, political and civil consensus.

Notably, at the end of last year, President Putin established an Organizing Committee of the Russian Historical Association to coordinate a series of events celebrating the 100th anniversary of the 1917 Revolution, which fundamentally changed the world and holds vital significance to the history of Russia.

Anyone who evaluates this revolutionary event truthfully and objectively would come to the same conclusion. The main result of this event was the birth of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). The USSR was in fact not only a government, but an era. Its legacy still shapes the current socio-economic climate and impacts the direction of economic and political development.

The foundations for development

The USSR dealt with the country's most important national endeavours, laying the foundations for the country's current and future development. After the October Revolution, the process of creating a new society with fundamental innovations in politics, economics and culture took off at a rapid pace and moreover, the people became the cornerstone of the Revolution. The people’s powerful energy might have been forgotten if it had not been for the Revolution.

In this period, our country went through a historically-necessary industrialisation process, transforming from an agricultural and rural power into an industrial and urban one. The quick development eliminated the gap between developed countries in all sectors of the national economy and created breakthroughs in sectors like space exploration and nuclear power. And thanks to that, we’ve become a global pioneer.

In a country that was devastated by World War I, freedoms and rights, which were just beginning to be considered in more developed countries, were first introduced in Russia. Those were the right to vote among common people, freedom of thought and gender equality. More measures were taken to protect workers, guaranteeing the right to rest, to work, to be educated and to have free medical care. In my opinion, all current socialist organisations, for example the famous Scandinavian socialism, would not exist if it weren’t for the results of the October Revolution that Russians paid for with their own blood and tears.

Thanks to the Great Revolution, Russia has made a great number of remarkable achievements. As the great Russian scientist and founder of natural sciences M.V. Lomonosov termed it the “presevation” and “development of Russian people”. At the end of the 19th century, half of our population couldn’t read or write, but by the mid-1930s, the Soviet government had completely eradicated illiteracy.

The October Revolution rekindled the aspirations of other nations towards reform, the struggle for freedom from colonial dependence and basic social rights. It was the processes that took place in our country before and after the Revolution, in many aspects, that became the catalysts for a phenomenon that Lenin called “the awakening of Asia”.
