A special "cloud-based" class

Speaking with reporters, Ms. Pham Thanh Nga, a lecturer in the Chemistry Faculty of Hanoi National University of Education, said: "As soon as I learned about the online Open Class project organized by the Khan Academy Vietnam team, I found it to be a great opportunity for pedagogical students to stand in front of a class and teach, as a way to practice what they have learned in the university."

Decisively, she encouraged students to take the initiative to open online classes to "sow the seeds of knowledge" to as many students as possible across the country.

Since the beginning of June this year, the group of 6 pedagogical students including Thang, Duc, Huy, Mai Chi, Mai An, and Mai, has opened 5 mathematics classes. As being held on Khan Academy online platform, these digital classes have granted access to students from all over Vietnam. Each class is tailored according to the proficiencies of each student cohort.

Based on different students' abilities, the teaching team will divide classes as well as assign lessons and weekly tasks. By assessing the minutes of studying and the level of understanding, the teachers will evaluate and find ways to "urge" their students to try harder.

Typically, students who encounter difficulties during learning will message their study group to discuss and get answers from their teachers. The teaching team also frequently communicates with the parents to provide more information and encourage the students to study more diligently and effectively.

The representative of the student group - Thang, said: "In the 4.0 era, it is a must to apply innovative technology in teaching. Through online classes on the Khan Academy platform, we get to apply technology in teaching. All of the student’s learning outcomes are assessed and graded by AI, and we can also save plenty of time on lesson planning. Instead, based on the learning progress of each student, we have a basis for developing a proper learning pathway and giving assignments that fit best for each student's competencies."

Agreeing with Thang, Mai Chi believes: "Online teaching is a skill that any teacher should have, especially for pedagogical students like us. Therefore, getting the opportunity to practice teaching like this helps us accumulate experience and spread knowledge to more students across all regions of the country. This special advantage is what pulls me into this online class since it helps us contribute to bridging the education gap and bringing equal learning opportunities to many students."

Teaching is also the most effective way of learning

As shared above, members of the teaching group are all university students, so organizing free classes for the community is not only about spreading knowledge but also a way for them to enhance their pedagogical skills.

Huy, one of the group members, said: "Having a chance to guide students from all regions has helped me develop a more flexible teaching method." For Duc, teaching students is the most effective way to "learn".

Through teaching and assessing students' learning results, Duc noticed that each student has a different learning speed and method of learning. From there, Duc can practice how to categorize student groups to find suitable teaching methods.

Moreover, interacting with students from all regions has helped the second-year student perceive the culture of each region and accumulate more teaching experience for his future confident career path.

The teaching group has also invested much effort in sharing the news with different social media groups.

Currently, the 5 classes run by the university students on the Khan Academy platform are all about Mathematics. In the upcoming school year, they plan to open more Math-English bilingual classes to help students learn more effectively without getting bored.

To bring this community class to more students across Vietnam, the teaching group has also invested much effort in sharing the news with different social media groups so more students can seize this valuable opportunity.

Witnessing the clear progress of her students after directly operating the free classes for the community, Ms. Nga said: "I am very proud and hope that many more students, not only at Hanoi National University of Education but also from other universities, will know about the Open class project on the Khan Academy platform and continue teaching and spreading knowledge to students across Vietnam."
