There are very favorable things, such as the topic that Viet Nam brings up about the future of ASEAN and the Association’s issues that always attract attention in the region. In addition, this is also a priority in Viet Nam’s foreign policy.
However, there are also challenges, such as the fact that ASEAN has too many forums and meetings at different levels. What are the new things Viet Nam propose at this Forum? Will it bring anything different? I hope that creating a very close channel, bringing ASEAN very close to its people and the young generation are the most important difference features.
The future of ASEAN is not a new issue but the approach is. In particular, the forum will be the place where not only the young generation but also scholars, businessmen... will talk about this theme. From there, their voices, opinions and ways of sharing are heard and mentioned in the official discussions of politicians.
In order to be like Shangri-La Dialogue or Munich Security Conference, there is still a long way forward which needs a lot of efforts. However, if we go, we will come because we have efforts, goals and determination. Our approach is to do our best. We believe and are optimistic that, if not like Shangri-La or Munich, it is still a very special imprint of Viet Nam.
This regional forum is an initiative of Viet Nam, held for the first time with many practical and meaningful activities. This is also Viet Nam’s specific contribution in the common effort to build a people-centered ASEAN Community, promoting the ASEAN’s rapid and sustainable development.
ASEAN is always a priority in Viet Nam’s foreign policy. Since joining the Association in 1995, Viet Nam has always making efforts and proven to be a responsible and proactive member in enhancing the central role of ASEAN. With many meaningful contributions, Viet Nam has gained a certain position in the eyes of international friends, in ASEAN particularly and in the world generally.
Perhaps today no one gives the question why Viet Nam, but perhaps the question is that how Viet Nam can contribute better to the development of ASEAN, improving the key role of ASEAN; and importantly, in the current period of many changes, how Viet Nam strives and contributes to preserving a peaceful and stable environment in the region and the world at large.
