On May 12th, the European Day in Vietnam 2024 was held in Ha Long City, Quang Ninh Province, under the theme "Vietnam - EU: Joining hands for a clean environment."
The event was attended by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Ninh Province Cao Tuong Huy, leaders and representatives of departments and branches of Quang Ninh Province, representatives of ministries and central agencies, EU Ambassador to Vietnam Julien Guerrier, Ambassadors, Charge d'Affaires and Spouses, and officials and staff of the EU Delegation and Embassies of EU member states in Vietnam.

At her opening remarks, Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang stressed that the Vietnam - EU Day held today is an initiative by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in contribution to raising awareness of the business community and the people on responsible conduct towards the environment, the natural ecosystems in general and the marine environment in particular. This would help prevent pollution in and the degradation of the marine environment, she emphasized.
It was also meant to enhance mutual understanding and cooperation between Quang Ninh and the EU Delegation, as well as the embassies of the EU countries, contributing to the flourishing Vietnam - EU comprehensive partnership and cooperation, according to Hang.
The Deputy Minister added that Vietnam wishes to continue receiving the effective cooperation and assistance from the EU and its members in promoting the awareness and capacity of protecting the environment and recovering soil, forest and marine ecosystems.

For his part, Ambassador and head of the EU Delegation to Vietnam Julien Guerrier highlighted the event’s importance to Vietnam’s efforts towards green and sustainable development.
Speaking highly of Vietnam’s commitments to building a green and circular economy and achieving net zero emissions by 2050, he affirmed that the EU will always stand side by side and support the country to carry out the initiatives on climate change response and environmental protection so as to help fulfill the Sustainable Development Goals.

After the opening ceremony, nearly 200 delegates engaged in the collection of waste along Bai Chay beach and on Ha Long Bay. They were also joined by a large number of local residents and tourists.

In 2000, Ha Long Bay was recognized by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage Site to honour its landscape beauty and geological and geomorphological values.

Giving an interview with the World and Vietnam Report right on the scene, EU Ambassador to Vietnam Julien Guerrier said he was very impressed that after spending an hour around Ha Long Bay, there was hardly any trash picked up. This demonstrates that Ha Long Bay has maintained a very clean marine environment. The Ambassador shared that in the future, the EU will seek further opportunities for cooperation with Vietnam in protecting the environment in general and the marine environment in particular.
