EU prioritizes support for Vietnam to develop digital economy

The diplomat affirmed that the EU considers Vietnam a potential partner in an array of fields. With its inherent strengths, Vietnam has been attracting the attention from many EU investors, especially the bloc’s top bodies.

The sound relationship between the EU and Vietnam has been reflected through the recent signing of many important agreements, such as the Vietnam-EU Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), the Vietnam-EU Investment Protection Agreement (IPA), and the defense cooperation agreement on the establishment of a framework for Vietnam’s participation in crisis management activities of the EU.

Aliberti said the EU elections 2019 have recently concluded. Early December is the moment when the European Commission and the EU leaders begin to carry out the new tasks. They have set important priorities and ambitions concerning the fight against climate change. The EU aspires to become a carbon neutral continent by 2050, and to take the lead in the issue.

Therefore, the EU wants to become a partner with an active role in cooperation with Vietnam in this field.

In the area of environmental protection and sustainable development, the EU aims towards the innovative and effective methods focusing on the specific spheres, such as renewable energy and reducing the use of fossil energy.

Another priority of Aliberti during his tenure is the digital economy. Accordingly, the EU will support Vietnam in its ambition to pursue a digital economy as well as the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which will benefit the community in the future.

Specifically, the EU will provide support, in terms of skills, technology and experience on developing the digital economy, for Vietnam, thereby bringing benefits to the society and creating a better environment from the development of technology. With this goal, the EU will support Vietnam in stages.

The first phase of support continues to focus on electrifying rural areas and improving public governance capacity for Vietnam.

The EU is currently the fourth largest trading partner and the second largest export market of Vietnam, while ranking fifth among the largest foreign investors in the Southeast Asian country with 2,133 registered projects.
