Dong Thap opens up resources, increases investment attraction

WVR - Dong Thap is gradually becoming an investment focal point as a watershed province in the Mekong Delta due to its improving infrastructure, urban landscape and flourishing economy.

Over the past time, Dong Thap has achieved remarkable economic results, with its average annual growth rate ranking among the top of the Southwest region.

Promoting its potential and advantages

Dong Thap is an agricultural province with a plentiful of resources. It produces over 3 million tons of rice per year, over 500,000 tons of aquatic products (pangasius), and over 400,000 tons of fruits, including mango with an output of over 140,000 tons/year, and many other processed agricultural products...

The province is promoting the restructuring of agriculture and industry, with processing as the main industry. Therefore, developing connected consumption of agricultural and aquatic products is very important for the province’s economy.

Its restructuring process has achieved certain results, contributing to the development of commercial production and the maintenance of growth rate. The quality of the province’s agricultural and aquatic products has been increasingly improved, gradually meeting the needs of domestic and international markets.

Dong Thap persists with the orientation of not separating agricultural production into different areas. It considers agriculture as an industry that provides raw materials for the processing industry, creates value-added products, is a driving force for tourism development, and gradually forms a chain of agricultural products. Now, many of Dong Thap’s localities are utilizing its strengths, such as fruit, flowers, aquatic products and traditional craft villages, along with the development of community-based tourism, to contribute to raising rural incomes.

Many of Dong Thap’s industrial, agricultural, and tourism products are well-known by many domestic and foreign organizations and individuals. Also, high-tech agricultural products and exemplary tourism products have brought Dong Thap’s image to the whole country and international friends.

In the coming time, Dong Thap will continue to build an image of a friendly and efficient provincial government. It will complete its identifying features to make the province stand out from other localities inside and outside the region. Dong Tháp’s socio-economic development in the first 6 months of 2023 continues to develop stably, achieving good results in many fields. The growth rate of gross domestic product (GRDP) in the first 6 months of 2023 was estimated at 5.89%, up 2.06% compared to last year. Which, agriculture - forestry - fishery increased by 5.38%, higher than the same period by 5.83%; the industry - construction sector increased by 5.53%, 1.56% lower than the same period last year; the trade - service sector (including product tax) increased by 6.48%, 1.03% higher than the same period last year.

Synchronous infrastructure, commitment to accompany

From being known as a “hidden” locality because of the division caused by natural terrain, thanks to the determination to build a “friendly and effective government”, and its commitment to accompany the business, along with open and transparent administrative procedures, Dong Thap’s image has gradually improved, attracting more and more investors.

The favorable business environment, along with the continued implementation of policies to support economic recovery, have created more prospects and opportunities for investment activities of businesses, people and investors. It is estimated that in the first 6 months of 2023, the whole province will have 325 newly established enterprises with a total registered capital of 1,930 billion VND.

The province continues to focus on activities to support businesses and start-ups and promote innovation. This is shown through the province’s design plan for the Startup and Innovation Space, implementing the project investment steps according to regulations and piloting a co-working space using public non-business unit buildings to support businesses and start-ups.

Dong Thap aims to promote synchronous infrastructure upgrading, creating favorable conditions for investment attraction. The province continues to implement and accelerate the construction of key traffic works, according to Conclusion No. 203-KL/TU dated September 27, 2021, of the 11th Provincial Party Committee (for example Cao Lanh - An Huu expressway, My Thuan - Can Tho expressway, My An - Cao Lanh expressway, Cao Lanh - Lo Te expressway and Highway 30 bypassing Cao Lanh city). Also, the province focuses on speeding up the progress of Tan Kieu Industrial Park, Dong Thap Border Gate Economic Zone, Tan Lap Industrial Cluster, and Quang Khanh Industrial Cluster.

Cooperate with investors and develop together

Dong Thap always considers investment attraction as one of the driving forces for economic recovery and the provincial government is focusing on speeding up its implementation. Dong Thap Provincial People’s Committee has issued a list of projects calling for investment in the province in the period of 2021 - 2025 in Decision No. 491/QD-UBND-HC dated April 28, 2021. Currently, the People’s Committee is considering and approving the adjustment of the list of projects calling for investment to serve the promotion of calling for investment in the province in the coming time. The province also continues to strengthen the overall supervision of approved projects, and of investment registration certificates to help solve enterprises’ difficulties and problems. Also, the province is accelerating the review of projects to point out which are behind schedule or not being implemented.

In the first 6 months of the year, there were 7 projects approved for investment, with a total investment capital of 6,242 billion VND (in the same period in 2022, there were 8 projects with a total investment capital of 1,304 billion VND), in which, there are 3 foreign investment projects (FDI), total investment capital is about 437 billion VND.

Up to now, Dong Thap has attracted many investors, including big names such as NovaGroup, T&T Group, Phat Dat Industrial Park Investment and Development Joint Stock Company, Masterise Group, Everland Group, Delegation from Cheorwon, ROK…

The province has established great and sustainable cooperation with major partners such as the ROK, Japan, Chinese Taipei and some European countries.

On June 28, Dong Thap Provincial People’s Committee, together with the Indian Consulate General in HCMC, successfully hosted and organized the 2023 Trade and Investment Cooperation Conference between India and Dong Thap province. More than 130 businesses from India participated in exchange activities, connecting and exploring investment opportunities in areas such as agriculture, agricultural engineering, food processing, fisheries, information technology and tourism.

Through the conference, many cooperation links were initially established, promising to create a solid premise for bilateral cooperation in the coming time. At the same time, Dong Thap continued to affirm that it always listens to best serve the business community and investors.

In the coming time, Dong Thap will continue to prepare favorable conditions for cooperation and development; strive to become a destination and bridge to attract more foreign investors in the province, especially those from ASEAN countries.
