About 385 million USD needed to upgrade three national highways in Mekong Delta

In the Mekong Delta, the Department for Roads of Vietnam has proposed a project worth nearly 9.3 trillion VND (385 million USD) to upgrade and innovate parts of three national highways – No 53, No 62, and No 91B.

In the Mekong Delta, over 6.25 trillion VND will be sourced from the World Bank’s loans and over 3 trillion VND from Vietnam’s counterpart capital, according to a proposal submitted to the Ministry of Transport.

Vietnam Road Administration has just submitted to the Ministry of Transport for approval the investment policy of the project to upgrade and renovate 3 national highways (including National Highway 53, National Highway 62, and National Highway 91B) connecting the region and adapting to climate change. Mekong Delta region, using World Bank (WB) loans.

Specifically, National Highway 53 proposes to upgrade Nga Tu Bridge (Km7+820-Km8+730); Long Ho-Ba Si section (Km11+295-Km56+180) with a total investment length of about 41km, in Vinh Long and Tra Vinh provinces.

National Highway 62 is invested in upgrading and improving the section from Km4+200 (intersection with Ho Chi Minh City-Trung Luong Expressway) to Km74 with an investment length of about 69km including building a new bypass of about 8km, in Long An province.

National Highway 91B will be upgraded section Km2+604 (Can Tho Bridge intersection) - Km143+480 with an investment length of about 141km, in Can Tho City, Hau Giang, Soc Trang, and Bac Lieu provinces. All three national highways have been upgraded and renovated to meet level 3 delta road standards, with a design speed of 80 km/h; The roadbed cross-section is 12m wide, and the road surface is 11m wide, including 2 motor vehicle lanes and 2 rudimentary vehicle lanes.

The project will upgrade about 69km of National Highway No 62 in Long An province, Nga Tu bridge and a 41km section of National Highway No 53 in Vinh Long and Tra Vinh provinces, and a 141km section of National Highway No 91B in Can Tho city and the provinces of Hau Giang, Soc Trang, and Bac Lieu.

Once upgraded, the roads will have four lanes, a designed maximum speed of 80km per hour, 11 m-wide road surfaces, and 0.5 m-wide roadsides.

The department said the project will be implemented in five years after the funding agreement takes effect.
