UN Peacekeeping Chief hails Vietnam's leadership in gender equality and global peace efforts

For over 25 years, the United Nations in general and UN Women in particular have consistently supported Vietnam in various fields, especially through close cooperation in developing the National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security (WPS NAP), which was recently approved by the Prime Minister in January 2024.

Affirming that gender equality is a core focus in Vietnam's economic and social development strategies, policies, and plans, especially as 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action – a historic document in promoting global gender equality and women's empowerment – Deputy Minister stated that Vietnam actively participates in the gender equality and women's advancement agenda at both regional and global levels.

On this occasion, the Deputy Minister highlighted three priority areas in gender equality work that Vietnam affirmed at the 69th session of the United Nations Economic and Social Council's Commission on the Status of Women (CSW): Improving institutional, legal, and policy frameworks to promote women's equal participation; enhancing women's economic empowerment and ensuring their equal participation in the labour market by strengthening public-private cooperation to mobilise social resources supporting women and recognising, reducing, and redistributing unpaid domestic and care work; and increasing women's participation, contribution, and leadership in STEM fields, innovation, and digital transformation.

He proposed researching and developing STEM ecosystem models in each country, where women and girls are encouraged, supported, and guided in learning, training, and career development in fields such as artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and the digital economy.

Sharing some of Vietnam's achievements in gender equality work, the Deputy Minister expressed his hope that Ms. Caroline Tinashe Nyamayemombe will continue to contribute positively to promoting the cooperative relationship between UN Women and Vietnam in the coming time, effectively implementing the Vietnam-United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework 2022-2026 and the National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security.

For her part, Ms. Caroline Tinashe Nyamayemombe praised Vietnam's remarkable achievements in socio-economic development and international integration, affirming that UN Women will continue to support Vietnam in promoting gender equality and women's advancement and empowerment.

UN Women and Ms. Nyamayemombe personally will closely coordinate with other United Nations organizations to effectively and synchronously implement programs, contributing to supporting Vietnam in achieving Sustainable Development Goals, cooperation on women and science and technology, and narrowing the digital gap.
