It is an opportunity for Vietnamese communities in Australia to celebrate their cultural identity and share their customs with the wider Australian society, fostering greater understanding and appreciation between the two nations. Diplomatically, through cultural exchanges, events, and celebrations surrounding Tet, both countries can deepen mutual respect and promote further collaboration in trade, education, creative industries and tourism.
Preserving and promoting the cultural values of Vietnamese Tet is valuable. Globalisation brings cultural exchange and diversity, and allows a sharing of unique traditions. Tết brings together family and community, recognising Vietnam’s deep cultural heritage. Our Embassy team looks forward to this important time.
Australia’s multicultural society plays a key role in helping preserve and promote Vietnamese Tet, ensuring it continues to be recognized and appreciated at Lunar New Year festivals and celebrations all over Australia. Our own Prime Minister also releases a Tet message to all Vietnamese people and those who celebrate across Australia. These festivals and messages foster deeper understanding and respect between our two nations.
In 2024, our relationship entered a new phase with the elevation of our ties to the Comprehensive strategic partnership in March. In October, our Foreign Ministers agreed on a plan of action which we are now working to implement with our Vietnamese partners. This upgrade is significant as it opens up exciting new possibilities for our countries in the years to come.
Being Comprehensive strategic partners is a reflection of the strategic trust in the relationship and growing depth and breadth of our collaboration. It also represents a shared commitment to peace, security, and prosperity in the region and highlights the importance of our partnership as we face global and regional challenges together.
We’re proud to be working together with Vietnam on its goals for digital transformation and green technology – essential sectors for the country’s development in the coming years. Australia is a natural partner for Vietnam as it positions to become a major player in the clean energy market.
Vietnam’s huge reserves of rare earth minerals, vital in the production of clean technologies and renewables paired with Australia’s world leading processing expertise, and high ESG standards to guide investment decisions, put us in a prime position to meet our mutually ambitious targets.

Through the Aus4Innovation Program, the Australian Government is demonstrating a strong commitment to fostering innovative and sustainable agricultural practices in Vietnam. In August 2024, we announced A$1.45 million of grant funding for projects that leverage high-tech solutions aiming to change the agricultural farming landscape across Vietnam. These grants go beyond financial support - it is the catalyst that strengthens collaborations between Australia and Vietnam for sustainable socio-economic development.
ACIAR-supported research addresses challenges in agriculture by introducing innovative, research-driven technologies that enhance climate resilience, improve resource efficiency, and expand market access. These initiatives strengthen farmers' livelihoods while promoting sustainable exports.
A highlight includes the Sustainable Mekong Rice initiative (Co-funded by ACIAR and SunRice Group, Australia) which equips smallholder rice farmers with sustainable farming practices and connects them to premium export opportunities.
This will be my first Tet holiday in Vietnam and I’m lucky to experience this vibrant and meaningful celebration. Tet is not just a time to celebrate the past, but to look forward to new opportunities and fresh beginnings. This sense of renewal and optimism is something that resonates deeply, and I’m looking forward to embracing all the traditions and customs of Tet while sharing the joy and warmth of the Vietnamese people.
To our Vietnamese friends, as the Tet holiday approaches, I send my warmest wishes for a prosperous and joyful New year. May the Year of the Snake bring bold new opportunities, deepened connections, and lasting happiness to you and your loved ones. Chúc mừng Năm mới!
